Step by step instructions on timing belt installation 2000 hyundai accent

I need to know step by step. does it have to be top dead center or on exhaust stroke. the crank turns twice to every one rev. of the cam

Right, so you have two TDC's-the exhaust stroke and the compression stroke Top Dead Center-and both occurr when the crank hits the zero mark on the timing scale.
Always set timing with the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. How do you know which is which? If you have a distributor, the rotor will be pointing to number one cylinder tower, when at TDC of the compression stroke. If you are on the exhaust stroke's TDC, the rotor will be pointing just opposite of number one .
If you don't have a distributor, look at the valves for cylinder one under the valve cover. If at TDC of compression stroke, both valves will be closed. At TDC of exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve will be open.
You can also find the compression stroke on number one by pulling out the spark plug for number one, and either put a wrench or socket on the crank pulley and turn it clockwise, or use the starter and bump the engine over in short bumps. Put your finger or thumb over the spark plug hole and feel for the pressure to build up. As soon as you feel pressure on your finger, (if turning by hand, pressure will be slight, but you can feel it) you are on the compression stroke. Stop bumping the starter and turn the crank on around by hand until the zero mark lines up on the timing scale-TDC of compression stroke! The exhaust stroke will have no pressure build-up as the piston comes to top-because the exhaust valve is open. On the compression stroke, both valves are closed as the piston travels up the cylinder.

there should be an acid mark (black mark) on gear, and yes cylinder #1 top dead center ps. make sure to disconnect distributor so it dont fire

well hold on there cowboy, first consult your service manual if your cars engine is an interference type. it means that if ever your timing belt breaks the valves that were stranded shall be hammered by up moving piston. eventually bending and warping of some of the valves would be a result. sometimes a damaged piston could also happen. timing belt breakage is a very serious matter and should not be taken likely. if you do not have a manual, what i do is removing the whole cyclinder head and inspect it. its better to be sure than sorry. in other cases you could see the warped valves by turning the crankshaft from tdc to 90 deg. and after which try turning the camshaft all the way around and carefully feeling the ease or difficulty in turning it and also the lift and rest of the rocker arms. any deviations you from the standard filler guage clearances would mean a bent or broken valves. hope this helps.

Think you have to put a flat bar across the back of the cam shafts same as the old ZETEC ford motors. Failing that are the vernier pullies marked with eithr O T or do they have a - or a . that line up with a position on the end of the cylinder head.

I am changing timing belt in a 2000 accent and it wont start i lined up the timing marks and even turned it one full turn after that and it still dont start turns very freely


lots of possibilities. sounds like you may be out 180 degrees.
im thinking crank probably needs cylinder 1 at top dead center and then line the marks up.
best to double check the book.

Changing timing belt on hyundia accent


Make sure the crank pulley is lined up with the top dead center mark. The make sure the crankshaft is lined up with its mark. Its easier if you can line the marks up before you take the old belt and try not to move the crank shaft are cam pulley.

Need to know how to check the timing for 1997 Hyundai Accent Gt!


Not sure why he would tell you the engine has to be taken out to set the timing. If he means the timing belt is wore out and needs to be changed, you can change the belt without pulling the engine. The engine cant be timed. It is set automatically.

DID THE BELT BREAK AND THEN IT WAS CHANGED. If so then you may have bent valve. IF NOT then vehicle may be timed wrong. 2002 Hyundai Accent Problem


first thing i need to know is did the timing belt break?
second is are you sure you aligned the timing marks and after the belt tensioner was tight you rechecked to make sure the timing stayed where you had it.
next step would be a compression check to if a valve was bent whenchanging the belt
i have seen this happen and this engine is an interferance engine.

Is my timing correct?


it was good to check how timing is before you removed old belt.
anyway first before you fited new one rotate the engine by hand look front crankshaft timing mark,
put piston number one should top dead center look cranshaft mark.when you done.
second step is to set up camshaft check timing mark on the camshaft follow the marks fisr cylinder.
