Question about Dodge Cars & Trucks

Open Question

2003 Dodge Ram Van 3500 series. 5.9ltr. Intermittent spark.

Thus far I have changed the ASD, crank sensor (returned it when no start occurred), coil, cap, rotor, inspected and cleaned the distributor pickup and changed the dongle leading to the coil. I have checked the wiring harness leading to power control unit on the firewall and its connections. I have pulled on the entire wiring harness to see if there is a short or broken wire when the van started. Checked the harness leading the the computer under the drivers seat. I disconnected the battery to reset the computer. also did the reset by cycling the key. The gas pump cycles when the key is turned. Van died once while driving. Generally starts several times in a row then nothing. Thoughts? Ideas?

I replaced the ASD earlier. No effect. I have had a few suggestions that it could be the pick up in the distributor but I am leaning towards the PCM ECU. I downloaded all the error codes for dodge. Hopefully I can get to an advanced auto have a scan done and to see if I can isolate it prior to spending 200-500 on a PCM.

SOURCE: died while driving

while engine is running grab the wire harness that leads into the distributor housing with a pair of needle nose pliers and wiggle the wires!!
if the engine stumbles or stalls that is your prob!!!
go to parts store and get a magnetic pickup assembly!!
i think they call it something else but its the same concept, just different because it's a dodge thing!!!

Distributor pick up coil has failed ( hal effect ) , remove cap and rotor and you will see it usually under a plastic shield . Just remove and replace .. they are fairly cheap.

1999 Dodge Ram 1500 cargo van will not start

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse.
If your missing several system, an example, at the ignition coil and fuel injectors, engine cranking, check the dark green wire with orange tracer for voltage? If no voltage that leads back to asd relay. I'm not saying the relay is faulty. Your computer has to see both the cam and crank sensor signals or it may not ground the asd relay. The asd relay supplies voltage to several systems.

I'm not familiar with dodge but I know Ford's and GM's have ignition modules that go out and you lose spark.

Could be one of two things. If you changed all of this and still no spark it is either a ground problem or computer is bad.

1995 DODGE RAM B1500 NO START

You need to use a LED type test light for the injectors or a Bosch style Noid light for the injector. To test the cam/crank sensor signal you either need a scanner to read them or a lab scope to show you a signal. The pickup plate in the dist handles the injector timing, the crank sensor provides a RPM signal. They both feed the computer information for ignition timing. Good fuel pressure, injector activity(Noid), and good spark out of the coil. The coil is what I replace the most of.
