1990 corrolla broken timing belt. Is there a way to know TDC on compression stroke without removing the valve cover? Thanks.

sure compressiong gauge
if #1 is the setup, you didnt say,
firing order is 1 3,4,2.
so the crank fires every 180 degrees.
so 1 and 4 are both at TDC same time, look with head off. see that.
so if you use hose sized to fint spark hole.
blow air with lips (lungs) in to both holes, the one that stops you
is #1 firing, the #4 blows easy is #4 on the exhaust stroke.
if #4 wont blow turn the crank 360 degrees CW clock wise
and #1 is now firing. and #1 wont blow.
easy no? and no cover off, and all sparks out, if not obvious.

Car starts great, warms up then misfires and stalls out. Installed new water pump, timing. This question has been answered but the detail below still pertains to this same issue.

Hi, if you have been talking to somebody, if you reply on the comment link, they will know your asking another question. As far as firing order, whatever cylinder would have to be on compression stroke.

No start. Is the crank out 180?

Normally if your timing mark are at the right place it should start recheck does mark

2000 hyundai accent. car ruan great right up to the point of the timing belt breaking.

It could be off 180, if making a bad knocking sound then yes piston is probibly out but turn ur distributor rodar 180 degrees or even 360 because u may be on your compression stroke when u need to be on exsaust. Double check your marks on belt might be off a tooth.

well try removing the distributor and spin it around half way 180 degrees then try. it seems you are off there are two ways to install the distributor because two turns for the crank equal one for the distributor.if still wont start call on me again i will help you .

1996 gmc jimmy wont start seems like advanced timing issue backfiring out throttlebody, replaced timing pick up, distribitor cap, crank sensor, ICM, when ignition conrol module replace the engine ran fine...

You said the problem happened right after the engine was replaced correct? If so bring number cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire. It's possible the distributor was installed 180 degrees out.

Wont start

Yes ,it is possible,make sure the plugs are good and clean,not gas fouled,and use some transmission fluid in the intake to get the compression up.

check all vacume lines some will cause your motor to act 180 out and also if valves are chatering get a feeler gauge and set them to 12 if to much drop down one..
