Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

In the beginning of 2010 my 2007 GMC Envoy started making a really loud whining noise coming from the driver side of the engine in the front. the car runs fine I still drive it but it is getting louder. I took it to a mechanic and he thought it was the idle bearing. But further conversation with other mechanic told me if it was the idle bearing it would have fallen apart by now. others have told me that it's the alternator bearing. as soon as I start the car you can hear the wind noise and with acceleration to each gear you can hear the whining change with the gears. and gets louder and higher as the engine rpm go up. can you help?

Could be the start of a transmission problem.
GM had a ton of recalls from 2004-2010 on their transmissions.

aside from the worst case.
Ask your mechanic friend if you have a "fan clutch" and the test is simple. When you shut off the engine, does the fan continue to spin for a short time?

I have run into a few that had faulty fan clutches. If you hear it when shifting gears, that leans toward the transmission, but related, and also a recall from GM is the driveshaft.

You can call the service department at any GM dealer, ask for a service drive person, then have your VIN number handy as you ask them to do a search for recalls for your vehicle.

Hope you get it sorted out.

I am a former GM mechanic.

Thanks for advice. Right now my car is under recall for electical problems with driver door. Thing is its coming from somewhere from right up front. I was gonna pull the belt off this weekend and see if it still makes that noise and if not, im gonna hand crank the different mechanisms to listen for noises. The tranny fluid is still nice and red and the other fluids look good to. Im gonna do a power steering check too. So ill keep ya posted on what i find.

SOURCE: Engine whine noise

most likely a belt tensioner or pulley take some penetrating oil and spray the center of each pulley one at a time if the noise stops you got your bad pulley if not take the belts off the motor and spin everything by hand to feel or hear any grinding noises if you still don't feel anything run the motor (not for more then a minute) with the belts off and if the noise is still apparent your timing belt needs to be checked right away! it may be on its way out and if that goes your motor is toast good luck and please rate -jeff

SOURCE: Loud accelerating whining

THE FAN CLUTCH WILL MAKE A LOUD ROARING NOISE WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED AND GET LOUDER AS THE RPM IS RAISED. THERE IS A PROGRAM UPDATE THAT SOMETIMES FIXES THIS PROBLEM. IF NOT THE FAN CLUTCH WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED AND THE PROGRAM UPDATED.

SOURCE: 2003 Hyundai Tiburon making a weird noise

Hello mpolci...The 2003 Tiburon was sold to the public with a defective clutch, it failed due to warpage and bad pressure plate... among other things. There are MANY class action lawsuits. Did you resurface or replace the flywheel when the clutch was replaced? Did you go with an aftermarket clutch kit, or factory? Also the slave cylinder on the 03 was known to have a defective valve.
You can try checking the levels and bleeding the system and if you still have problems, then it could be a release bearing, a loose clutch pad, or a broken pressure plate spring....If the clutch is still under warranty, i would return it to the installer.
Good luck, i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

SOURCE: Holden Viva- Automatic transmission troubles.

Hey mate, Had exactly the same problem. Suggest you take the car to your local auto transmission repair centre (not holden) and they can check the electrical diagnostics - if it the Transmission inhibitor Switch (as it was on mine - if so should cost you no more than 1 hour labour and about $75 - $95 for the switch.

Ac makes whining noise on a 2004 Pontiac grand prix

Is the whining noise coming from the engine compartment where the compressor is located or is the noise coming from inside the car? If the noise if coming from inside the car it could be your blower. When a blower wears down the bushing is the first thing to wear down and it begins to have play. That makes the blower/fan vibrate making a loud whining noise. Replacing the blower could solve that whining noise.
If the noise if coming from the AC compressor, it also could be a bad bearing within the compressor.

Maybe time for a throttle body cleaning, make sure both the front side and back side are cleaned thoroughly. Also disconnect the battery while doing the cleaning, this will reset the computer and allow it to relearn to the cleaned throttle body.
Do you mean a whining sound? Does the sound change if you turn the wheel to the right or left? If so, it may be a front wheel bearing.

2006 GMC Envoy has 2 problems. I thought the alternator was going bad because of some battery problems. Pulled it out and had it tested. Nothing wrong with it. The biggest problem is a loud whine when...

The whine could be a pulley, start the engine, raise the hood, and then rev the engine to see if you can duplicate the noise. It could be a weak belt, or a bad bearing in either the alternator, or a pulley when the engine is under a load. Check your fuel lines and the schrader valve on the fuel rail to ensure they are good, and stop the leak. Usually a fuel leak on an engine will dissipate to quickly and you can never find it, so be thankful that you did.

Check your belt. Belts will whine when they're worn, cracked or glazed. I hope this was helpful. It's not normal. Take care and God bless.

Engine whinning

I had the same problem on my 2005 Envoy. Turned out to be the idler pulley bearing. It is just a pulley the belt rides on. The bearing in the pulley was what was making the high pitched whine. I replaced the bearing, and the noise went away.
