1997 TAHOE 4WD

My '97 Tahoe won't shift into 4WD. I can hear the actuator moving, but the light on the console just blinks and it doesn't lock in. I live in ND and thought that perhaps it was iced up, but it still doesn't work after thawing out.

I changed the actuator, and it still didn't work. I spoke with a mechanic friend, and he said to check the fuse, which was blown, but he said when those actuators go bad they end up drawing such a load that they will blow the fuse. So according to him the actuator did need replacing. Either way, it works and I have a new actuator.

Try the transfer case control module that is located under the dash between drivers door and steering column

This just happened to mine, you have a short some where. then the system doesn't get power the switch does this to tell you something is wrong, probably just a fuse, if its not the fuse, then you may have corrosion on one of your electrical splices. This may need to be brought to a mechanic otherwise

My 2003 Chevy Tahoe has traction control. I noticed this winter when i was on some ice that the traction control light stated that traction control was activated but i could hear grinding and it did not...

It is not supposed to. The traction control gives power to opposing wheels and applies brakes in milliseconds to prevent total loss of control of the car. The computer immediately takes over and prevents 4wd that could send the car into a worse skid.. You are talking about ice which is very different from snow where traction is concerned. The grinding you hear could have been the anti-lock system being activated.

4x4 troubleshooting

This usually means the actuator isn't shifting in. If you look on the transfer case you will see an actuator, have someone hit the button while you have your hand on it, you should feel the solenoid react. If not check the connector for and bent or corridors terminals, if not I would unbolt the actuator and see if it works pulled out. It maybe the connection, actuator or the shift fork inside the transfer case. Good luck

I replaced the blend door actuator on my 2005 Tahoe on the rear A/C unit and it moves the actuator to its full range and then won't move?

In most cases once you replace the actuator, you have to calibrate it with a scan tool thru the computer.

Replaced brake switch now won't go out of park 1997 chevy tahoe what do i need to do?

do the brake lights come on now with the new brake switch? Why did you replace the brake switch? It sounds like the switch is not being actuated or does not have a good electrical connection. You cannot move the shifter out of park unless the brake switch indicates the brakes are depressed. Whether or not the brake lights are functioning is a good indicator of whether the switch is working or not.

I have a 2002 Chevy Tahoe making a grinding noise in the front drivers side wheel, what could this possibly be?

If 4wd Tahoe, it is the CV joint going out or is out, replace part about 250 bucks, very common in 4wd Tahoe

4WD LO will not disengage what can cause this.

@ 2000 gmc: Exactly right.

asker: Also, it helps if you're rolling at about 2 mph with the steering wheels straight.
You cannot shift into 4LO with the wheels turned or when in a drive
gear. Also, it may be that you need the electric shift unit serviced.
It is not recommended to drive on dry pavement while in 4LO.

I have a 97 chevy tahoe and the 4x4 wont lock in i just replaced the actuator and it just blinks on 4x4 . i do have 12 volts @ the harness to????

Your transfer case could be locked up. Try pulling the shifter motor (servo) off of the transfer case and manually shifting the vehicle into 4x4. Make sure to block the wheels as it will roll if you shift into neutral. If you cant shift it, you need to have a professional look at the insides of your transfer case.
