Trys to start but won't turn over or stay running.
I have a 1996 Buick Skylark that will start sometimes and stay running sometimes (about once out of every ten tries), but most of the time, when you try to start it, it acts like it is going to start but won't. Someone told me it could be a clogged fuel filter. Could the problem be fuel related or is it something else?

It probably is the head gasket. Have you removed the head, or just the intake and valve cover? If you have the head off, you can see where the gasket is blown and it will show "water tracks" in the cylinder where blown.
When you remove the "gunk" sludge from the engine, use a putty knife to scrape off all you can get, then get a couple cans of CRC cleaner or the equivalent, and spray it down good. Remember, you'll have to drain the oil pan to get the gook out. And change your oil filter, before adding new oil. (after re-assembly)

Is there a SECURITY light lit on the instrument cluster ? What's the fuel pressure at ? Do you know how to test fuel pressure ? Does the check engine light come on when turning the key to run ,not start just the run position ? Did you try holding the gas pedal down a little way ? Go to you tube an check out videos on trouble shooting , engine won't keep running .
with out knowing exactly how long it was running for upside down I would suggest that the engine is damaged It may have a hydraulic lock in a cylinder ( full of water)
If the car was upside down, I imagine considerable body and panel damage
Best advice is to save your money , junk it and get another mobile car.
It almost sounds as if the vehicles theft deterrent system is shutting down. Is your vehicle equipped with a theft deterrent system ? If so there's several things that could be wrong or it could be as simple as doing what's called a relearn for that system. Attempt to restart it, once it starts then dies leave the ignition switch in the run position, if equipped with a theft system ( check your owners manual) there will be a light in the instrument panel that will begin flashing , while leaving the ignition switch in the run position wait for about 10 minutes, the light SHOULD stop flashing. Turn the ignition switch to the off position and attempt to start it. If it still bothers you're either dealing with something deeper or different type of a problem. Good luck.
1996 buick skylark i see this problem all the time, it starts and then shuts off let it cool down and it starts back up only to die again.lol... been there to many time, replce the crank sensor and you sould be fine. the crank sensor is behind the crank pully, jack the car up and pull the passanger side wheel the crank pully will be right there, you may have to rent a pully puller from a part store but the job is simple
