Question about 1997 Dodge Caravan
I have a 97 Dodge Caravan LE V6 3.8. It will start, but dies after 3 seconds of running. Also when it has this problem I have no dash light-up meaning, everything in the whole van works, but the dash part wont read fuel gages, temp gages, dont even light up to tell me what gear im in. After unhooking the battery for a couple days the van will run for about a day then goes back to the problem leaving me stranded. Can someone tell me what it might be, and if I have to take it to the dealer or can a mechanic shop fix it? Thankyou
Does your van have a security system? If yes, try using another key, also in response to myky44,your right, I work as a mechanic and it pisses me off to have to charge people to hook up the scanner so here is some free advice; don't rush to a garage as soon as the check engine light comes on unless you notice a difference in the performance or handling of your vehicle, 90% of the time it comes up as evap ie:gas cap not tight or small leak detected and good luck finding the small leak this is really nothing to worry about
If you notice the check engine light coming on and of randomly it is most likely an O2 sensor
Most manufactures recommend changing a timing belt at 80,000 kms (50 000 miles if my math is correct), if you have an interferance engine this is a must do unless you have the wallet to repare extensive engine damage, what this means is that when the belt breaks the bottom of the engine thrashes the snot out of the top of the engine bending valves and pistons are most common

Hi, I have a 97 Dodge Caravan 3.0L, It did the same thing, would run for a little while then die on me going down the road. I had it checked out and they couldn't find out what was causing it to die. Finally a neighbor who is a mechanic checked it out and found that the speed censor on the transmission was going out and I had to replace the map censor. Two weeks later the timing belt broke. My advice is to have a mechanic check your timing belt and the two censors. My mechanic used a code machine hooked up to my dash. If your sort on cash, this might help.
