Question about 2005 Jeep Liberty

Open Question

I have a 2005 jeep liberty diesel it smokes black bad has no power it can barely go down the road it fuel knocks and when you rev it up it is not very responsive it take a while for rpms to go up

I put on a new turbo the old turbo was bad checked all hoses for splits their good while it was running checked injectors they are working could it be a egr valve

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.5 diesel.

Soungs like egr valve is stuck open. Take it off and look inside small hole on the bottom. The pintle inside should be all the way closed. If not then replace the egr.

remove the pump again check for anything restricting the pumps inlet and make sure when the pump is put bacl that none of the pipes has a twist or bend that will restrict the flow of fuel

Engine knock 02 Jeep Liberty 3.7, its not the rockers.


Could be a bearing. If so could be expensive. If its a straight 6 could be a host of things, head crack that has over heated engine makes it sound like a diesel, bad lifter, you need a mechanic to look before real damage is done

What color is the smoke?
White,blue or grey?

Use a bottle of yellow HEET dry gas to remove any moisture problem in the fuel.

Clean / replace air filter.

Top off ATF to MAX level.

Use starting fluid to aid starting.

Change fuel filter and air filter. If that doesn;t help you may have a fuel transfer pump pressure problem.

Black exhaust smoke from Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD


The smoke and the the bogging down are due to either too much fuel flow or to too little airflow. Your engine is flooding and running way to rich hence the low fuel mileage. Could be a faulty pump with too high pressure, bad or wrong sized injectors, (assuming they actually fixed the sensor problem) or airflow restriction,
