There is always a small percentage that you have a electrical short, but 90% of the time it will be a FUEL SENDING UNIT, not to be confused with the fuel pump. Check your electrical, Especially the ground wire near; on top of the fuel sending unit which is conviently located on the TOP of your fuel tank, Sorry for the bad news, but you're going to have to drop the tank. Since yo're down there, best to replace the fuel pump since it's all right there in front of you.

Could be a faulty sending unit or gauge. Someone would need to unplug the sending unit at the tank and test the circuit.

Common problem on the 03-06 Silverado instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Silverado fuel gauge problems

I have a97 chevy c1500 the fuel gauge never worked,so i put a new sending unit in still dont work gauge reads past full @all times can anyone help

Your problem with you fuel gauge is not the sending unit or the gauge in the cluster. You have a broken ground wire in the the harness that goes to the sending unit. look for broken wires or wires that have bin picked with a test light they will have corrosion

Gas gauge wont go past half it stops at half and will go to empty but never past half

There is a fuel gauge sensor in your fuel tank. If the sensor is out of place, it will not read the amount of gas in your tank correctly if it is out of place. This is a fixable job, but I recommend a ceritfied mechanic. Hope this helps! Please give 4 thumbs up!

Could be a short to ground on the positive wire leading from the fuel sender.
