Exhaust pipe came off with catalytic converter

While crossing train tracks .. do i need to replace the converter, or do i need the whole muffler system?

NO you can not drill holes before the Catalytic Converter to give it air. Drilling a hole will set the service engine soon light on and you'll sound like a tank coming down the street. And why do you want to give the catalytic some air anyway's ??? Good luck and keep me posted.

Local muffler shop can weld it back together. Or if it's at a joint that has a flange, then the flange gasket can be replaced. Are the two pieces held together with bolts or are they welded.

check your fuel pressure regulator for a torn diaphram, which can cause a rich condition. The regulator is on top of the engine connected to the fuel injector rail with a hose. There is a second gas hose and a vacuum line attached. Pull the vacuum hose off and plug the hose with a golf tee. Start the car and check to see if any gas comes out of the regulator vacuum port. If yes, replace the regulator. If not, you may want to check the oxygen sensor that is indicating poor converter performance. You might try swapping it with the other downstream sensor and clear the code to see if the code comes back to the same sensor or the same converter. Let me know if you have questions.

Last time. I have Ford focus 2003 sedan dohc 2L. I lost a part from exhaust system. from back to front I see 1. tail pipe 2. rectangular box shaped part? Lunch Box? 3. missing part Muffler?


Starting from the front, coming off the exhaust manifold should have, 1. Exhaust pipe, 2. Catalytic converter, 3. Exhaust pipe, 4. Resonator, 5. Tail pipe. Also, there should be an Oxygen sensor somewhere around the catalytic converter.

Is there a diagram anywhere online for a 1993 Nissan Altima that shows where the catalytic converter is and how it connects to the exhaust system?


The catalytic converter is located appx. underneath the front passenger's seat, on the exhaust pipe. It's smaller than the muffler and squarish in shape. It bolted onto the exhaust pipe. There is only one exhaust pipe on that car and also only one catalytic converter.

I have an 1998 Chevy Blazer and need to change the catalytic converter, are the flange bolts welded and can i cut them


Catalytic Converter Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
Catalytic converter 2.2L engine gm-03-22-734.gif

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe flange mounting nuts from the catalytic converter.
  4. Remove the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts from the muffler.
  5. Remove the catalytic converter from the muffler.
  6. Remove the catalytic converter from the rear hanger bracket insulator.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter.
  8. Remove the (HO2S) from the catalytic converter.
To Install:
  1. Install the (HO2S) to the catalytic converter.
  2. Install a new gasket and the catalytic converter to the muffler.
  3. Install catalytic converter to the catalytic converter hanger.
  4. Install the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts to the muffler flange.
    • Tighten to 26 ft lbs (35 Nm).
  5. Install the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts to the exhaust manifold pipe flange.
    • Tighten to 26 ft lbs (35 Nm).
  6. Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
------ Catalytic Converter Removal & Installation 4.3L Engine To Remove:
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Raise and support the transmission.
  3. Remove the transmission support
  4. Disconnect the left and right pre-converter heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the post-converter (HO2S) connector. Muffler flange and gasket gm-03-43-731.gif

  6. Remove the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts from the muffler.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter from the muffler.
  8. Remove the exhaust manifold flange mounting nuts from the catalytic converter. Catalytic converter 4.3L engine gm-03-43-735.gif

  9. Remove the catalytic converter from the support bracket insulator.
  10. Remove the catalytic converter and gaskets.
  11. Remove the heated oxygen sensor.
To Install:
  1. Install the heated oxygen sensors as needed.
  2. Install a new gasket and the Install the catalytic converter to the support bracket insulator.
  3. Install the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold flange. Install the mounting nuts.
    • Tighten to 39 ft lbs (53 Nm).
  4. Using a new flange gasket, install the catalytic converter to the muffler. Install the mounting nuts.
    • Tighten to 30 ft lbs (40 Nm).
  5. Connect the left and right pre-converter heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
  6. Connect the post-converter (HO2S) electrical connector.
  7. Install the transmission support.
  8. Lower the transmission.
  9. Lower the vehicle.

Where in the engine is the catalytic converter


The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system and is usually found under the vehicle, and the exhaust will run from the exhaust manifold to a pre-catalytic converter, and then down to the catalytic converter, and then the exhaust will run from the catalytic converter to the exhaust muffler, and then continue out to the end of the tail pipe.
I have provided an image of the catalytic converter to help assist you.

My car is failing enspections because of a leak near/at flex pipe area. im not sure if i should just get a patch or replace the whole exhaust


if it is at the flex pipe, it is difficult to just get a patch.....i would just replace that section of the pipe, or worst case scenario, get a whole new exahust, but get the exhaust shop to use your catalytic converter and muffler, if there are no problems with them, this will cost you heaps

How many cadlitic converters does it have


It should only have one. It has a single exhaust and a small engine, no need for more. Your 2 pipes cross over into one and then go through the catalytic converter then on to the muffler. Hope this helps.

If the noise sounds like your muffler, but isn't coming from the area of your muffler, then you have an exhaust leak upstream from the muffler.

From the front of your muffler, follow the tubing forward to the catalytic converter, then forward to the engine exhaust manifold.

If you start with the car sitting for a few hours to make sure it's cold, you can use your hand to feel for blowing leaks while the engine is running, but chances are you'll be able to hear it. be careful of the catalytic converter itself, as it heats up fast, so check that first.

Once you've found the leak, the fix depends on the emissions laws in your state. If you have none, and the leak is in the middle of the pipe, you can buy pipe patchers (metal preferred) through auto parts stores or catalogs/websites. If you have strict emissions laws, or the leak is at the junction of the catalytic converter and pipe, you'll need to replace the failing part.

How to replace/remove both catalytic converters


Below are the steps needed to remove the catalytic converters. You may be able to first remove the band clamp from between the converter and the exhaust manifold, then loosen the rest of the system and to get enough clearance to slide the converter towards the front of the vehicle but you will need to first remove the clamp that holds the converter to the rest of the exhaust. Hope this helps

First you need to raise the vehicle.

Next, you need to pry the insulators from the support brackets and support the muffler and tailpipe with jackstands.

Then, loosen the the catalytic converter down pipe-to-front resonator clamps and separate the front resonator from the converter down-pipes. Carefully lay the free laying exhaust on the ground.

Then, remove the down-pipe-to-transaxle bracket nut, loosen the clamp and separate the extension pipe from the converter.

Next lower the vehicle and remove the air filter and intake ducts. Disconnect the wiring harness for the O2 sensor and the remove the sensor.

Finally loosen the band clamp at the exhaust manifold and remove the converter from the engine compartment. You may need to replace these clamps after removal because you need to pry it apart and they will leak when you reinstall.

Now disconnect the wiring harness for the O2 sensor and the remove the sensor.

Next remove the down-pipe-to-transaxle bracket nut

Finally loosen the band clamp at the exhaust manifold and remove the converter from the engine compartment.

Exhaust replacement & Rear Brakes


I can't see a problem with the converter, but if your in one of the states that does emissions testing it might be a problem as it most likely would leak where its clamped. The best thing to do is get it all on and try to find someone to weld it for you. As far as axel seals, if there bolt in axels unbolt pull out and use the end of the axel to pop out the old seal, and just tap the new seal in carefuly. seals around $ 10.00. Break kleen will clean up break shoes and drumb. Need more help just ask.
