1990 Camry Lifter Noise

I have a 1990 Camry V6 that has lifeter noise when first started, then goes away until the engine in under load or excellerating.
I have checked the valve lash and everything checks out there.
Any additional suggestions where the noise could be coming from?

thank you, but this engine does not have rocker arms, it is a dual over head camshaft with solid lifter/cam followers. No white washers that I have found?

  • Jeff Jan 13, 2009

There are no nylon washers on this engine

  • Jeff Jan 13, 2009

This engine does not have the washers you are refering to.

    Thanks any way.

You are refering to the engine that has rocker arms and has the nylon washer on the rod that holds the rockers. This engine has solid lifters under the camshaft only.

There should be small white nyon washers that keep the rockers from rubbing - alot of the time, these washers will break down, and "dissolve" and no one will ever know they were there.. if you go to the toyota dealer parts dept, they can pull a blown up view of the head and get the part number for those washers... install them as shown in the blown up diagram, or your chiltons/ haynes manual, and the noise will be gone!

thats what i am talking about.. sorry about the "rocker" term... the lifter/cam followers are what is clicking - the washers go between the followers and the sides of the bar they ride on.. its herd to imagine unless you see it really, I had to have someone at the dealer where I worked SHOW me the washers before I could "see" where they would go... I wish I could be more explanitory... can you post a pic, or a link to a pic of the head with no valve cover? I can modify it in paint and send it back...

I KNOW there are no washers, thats what is making the noise!! THEY DISSOLVE over time..thats what was wrong -- mine had the same problem...it almost sounded like a huge sewing machine...Its a 19 year old car, remember? what I am saying is....Go to the dealer...have them look up the microfische of the engine and they can ORDER the washers and SHOW you where they are supposed to go. (Since your originals have dissolved, thats why you cant see them)  Put thrm in, and the noises will be gone.

if thats the case, you simply need to shim the hydraulic lifters back into spec. They have these at the dealer as well, we used to call them shims or pills... either way you just need to find the thickness you need and order them, or you can take the easy but expensive way, and just have the head reworked..

What will be the problem if i have a taping noise when i start my car until it gets warm mitsubishi 380

A tapping noise that starts out cold and goes away when warm is usually caused by a valve lifter inside the engine. The lifter may be worn/leaking down and will be noisy until it fills with oil pressure. You can try an oil additive ( Lucas Oil Additive ) available at most part stores works very well with noisy lifters. Another noise that can happen cold and go away when warm is an exhaust manifold leak. However, this is normally a ticking type sound rather than a tapping sound.

Pull valve cover off and look for any bad lifters. Or could be piston rod. Sounds like sticky lifter. Not good.

1991 dynasty 3.3 valve lifter removal for cleaning or replacing

Before you tear apart half the engine can I suggest this. Find a can of "seafoam motor tune" you should be able to find it just about anywhere automotive parts are sold. Poor half the can in the oil. Start the engine and let it run until the lifter noise goes away. Change the oil and filter. Add the other half a can of seafoam to the oil and drive it. If you have a sticky lifter this will free it up. I have yet for it not to work. If the noise doesn't go away its probably not a lifter.

How do i adjust valves on a 4.3 vortec tbi motor

The 4.3 liter vortex uses a hydraulic lifter. There is no valve adjustment. If you hear a lifter tick than there is either a bad lifter or something broken in the valve train. Something yo can try for a sticky lifter is add 1/2 a can of seafoam motor tune the oil. Start the engine and let it run until the noise goes away. Then change the oil. If the noise doesn't go away than you have bigger issues. I have yet for the seafoam to not fix a sticky lifter especial in the 4.3 liter which we see quite often.

Taping noise in engine sounds like a lifter 2004 dakota 3.7 v6

if its a lifter then the only thing you can do is get an oil service and hope this gets rid of it. Alot of cars start with a lifter tap but it should go away wihtin 30 seconds or so.
