Question about 1998 Volkswagen Passat

98 passat manual shifting problem

As i was driving home the other night my 98 passat 20v turbo went screwy on me as i slowed down to pull in the driveway. I slowed to a stop and went to neutral after a strong smell. Then as I tried to shift into gear, it just didnt want to go. With quite a bit of force I was able to finally shift it into first to get in the driveway. The next morning I started it up and everything sounded fine until I tried to shift. I can get it into all gears with the clutch down but it takes alot of force and definately not driveable this way. Its fine of course when the car is off tho. Any suggestions? Please help!!!

auto or manual?
Either way you need the box repairing or replacing, which ever is cheapest. Gearboxes are not for amateurs and VW are known for gearbox issues.
the battery thing is likely to be coincidental

Will a 1.8 20v gearbox off a passat fit on a 1.8 20v turbo automatic to make it manual?

yes but you would need to alighn a manual linkage and parts of the loom would need to be replaced as well as ecu etc so its not worth the trouble and then the clutch pedal should have studs and fixing positions on the chassis already but the plate to allow the hydraulic clutch pipe through might need cutting. The flywheel will need replacing and the clutch plate etc.

My 1.8 20v turbo has no power but builds up

Check fuel system. Leaks,Dirty filter can cause this
condition. You could have gotten a tank full of bad fuel. If this is the case ,you must drain all fuel and dispose of it properly. Change the fuel filter AGAIN.
This should keep you busy this weekend.

OH, by the way you may have to replace the Turbo!!

putting the car in gear is not turning the starter m,otor y are using a direct drive postion the drive gear on your starter is not engaging there are two posible problems one the starter ring has damaged or broken teeth or your spring on your starter is broken in which y will neen a replacement ps is your battery fully charged
