Just make sure the timing belt is on properlyy, lining up the cam and crank in proper position to each other. The engine willstart when fully assembled because the electrical has not be altered. If it has a crank position sensor , be sure to put it back on after cleaning it and the connector.

SOURCE: 1988 toyota camry 2.0 engine (timing)

Pull #1 spark plug and rotate the engine until you hear air rush out of the cylinder, (plug the hole with your finger if you can), then look at the timing mark, it will be close to TDC

SOURCE: engine cranks car won't start

Sorry..... 1 notch off is just not good enough. It has to be exact , then if it doesn't run start looking at other posibilities.

Remember that the camshaft turns twice eash time the crank turns once. The distributor rotor works off a gear on the cam.
Your rotor could be off a bit , or it could look exactly perfect the way it was when tou took it out , and still be 180 degrees off.
You have to get your engine to "top dead center" and make sure everything is the way it should be.

A timing chain ( or belt ) can cause permanent and fatal damage to the valve train and pistons in motors that are "interference engines" Find out weather yours is. In a non-interference engine , the clearance between the valves and the pistons is large enough to alow them to move out of time without crashing into each other. An interference engine is not so forgiving.

The fact that your engine cranks makes me hopefull that it is a non interference engine , and that damage has not been done.

Try to find a haynes manual for you vehicle , it will walk you through the steps for most repairs.

How do i remove timing belt cover on 2000 toyota camry 4 cylinder 2.2 litre? i notice the securing bolts around the perimeter. do i access some of these from the wheel bay?

See here for info, p26 and 242.

This is for an earlier year model, but is for the 2.2L engine.

You will have to remove the crank pulley, timing belt covers and timing belt, for best access. Unless it is fairly new, I would replace the belt wile you are at it.

I want to see how to fix my timing belt engine.....

A 2.2L engine? You only have the one timing belt, which drives the camshafts, oil pump and water pump. The other belt(s) are drive belts for A/C, power steering, alternator etc.
To see if it is broken, lift the distributor cap a little and see if its shaft turns when the engine is cranked. If it does, something else is the cause. See here p25
