You should never drive a car with a red hot catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter is heater up to the point where it is that hot, it could be a serious fire hazard. Cars which might have a leak in a fuel line could be at a major risk for a fire or explosion if gas fumes come into contact with a catalytic converter in that condition. -----------------------------------------------------------------

SOURCE: ford taurus 2001 car start but once the car is cut off it won't start up again until it cools off the car is not running hot.

After you kill it, when you try to start it back up, does the starter turn the motor? Or is it froze up (will not turn over)?

Any chance the check engine light is on ?
You are correct in thinking the starting fluid would point to a lack of fuel, but its also possible the engine would start without it once something cools off a bit. Even a wiring harness problem could come and go.
If the idle air control valve failed, it would stall at stops but should start if you push on the gas pedal to open the throttle.
What happens if you shift to neutral when coming to a stop ?
It really sounds like an electrical component getting hot and failing, then coming back to life once it cools off.

WHY WOULD MY CAYLATIC CONVERTS GET HOT RED AFTER CHANGING PLUG AND WIRES ON A 96 LINCOLN /

You replaced the Plugs Wires in the wrong
firing order ?

Sort of creates a timing issue & causes the
exhaust to get hot

Other causes, vacuum leaks in to exhaust
or rich fuel mixture, but not to the point of red hot

Catalytic converter in 1996 grand am gets hot. car won't run

is the converter turning red looking because these do get hot but should not be fire fire red. it may be stopped up. I one becomes stopped up it will keep it from starting and can cause more damaged if you do get the car to start. The exhaust will not have anywhere to travel but back up to the engine.

Why is my cadilac converter red hot

Your engine is running rich:
if you continue to operate you will have cat converter failure.

Recommend dropping in to your local repair shop or parts store and run a diagnostic test.

This will identify why the engine is running so rich.

Have this problem fixed sooner than later.

Hope this tip helps.
