Question about 1996 Dodge Stratus

1 Answer

1996 dodge stratus tranny whines when in forward gear(s); been doing so for the past year with no apparent problems. Fluid level ok, but fluid a little burnt looking. Shifts gears fine with rare slippage. Tranny shop can't figure it out without pulling tranny to 'look into it.'

The first and also the cheapest way to attempt to diagnose this problem, would be to replace the lube in the transmission with the specified type in the manual. You did say it looked burnt, but are there any metal shavings or something like that?

double posted.
i think you mean Whine? noise.?
whines in what gear.??????? PRNDL?>>>>
whines parked or only moving or both?
is tranny A/T or M/T auto or stick????????????????????????????
my guess is auto.
if the auto whines at any time it's low on fluid, ? or too much (air trubulance caused) or bad a tranny
the problem is many folks don't read the operators guide on how to check ATF levels. and do it wrong, and over fill it big time.
causing what is called airation of the fluid, that in turn, destroys the bearings in said tranny. RTM and do it right.

in the usa we have this $4 manual.
in the usa this car is called the Esteem.
https://suzukipitstopplus.com/Products/1016-1996-esteem-owners-manual.aspx

see transmission page for tranny level checks.
on newer cars you must read the FSM to find this out.

We have had some colder weather in colorado and I have found that when I back out of the drive way and put the car in forward gears (automatic) it does nothing. Sometimes it takes 20 - 30 seconds before it...

have you check the tranny fluid level yet?
I dont know how m,any miles are on your vehicle, but have you changed the filter and fluid in the tranny?
if I was going by just what you wrote I would say either the out put or in put sensors are affecting it.

2004 Dodge Stratus coupe 2.4 L hard shifting on Manual Transaxle. How do I check fluid (Gear Oil) level?

There is a small pipe threaded plug on the drivers side of the tranny about half way up the body and aroun the rear center from front to rear. When removed, fluid should flow from the hole(providing the vehicle is level on all axises), if not, fill to top of the hole with new gearoil or tranny fluid whichever is specified in your manual. Thank you, Dana

It's grinding very hard when i put it in gear, drive or reverse.

Make sure you have enough fluid, and honestly, regardless of the fluid level, change it and put in new transmission fluid. If it's an automatic, change the transmission filter too. You can try adding some Lucas stabilizer as well. If that doesn't do it, you may be looking at a rebuild or replacement.
