To test the coil you can use a spark tester if you dont have a spark tester you can try a screwdriver place the metal end of the screwdriver into the coil wire or coil terminal end and crank the engine while holding the screwdriver about 1/8 to 1/2 inches away from a good ground (most metal surfaces of the engine) have someone crank engine spark should be crisp snapping sound and reach the full 1/2 in in length about 30kv for the type of coil on your car

I am assuming you have the 1.6 engine. You would check for power and a ground signal. You can disconnect the coil and put power to the positive terminal and then ground the negative to make it spark.

Number one cyl on coil pack not firing, all others are, codes reads misfire on 1 cyl should i replace the coil pack and how do you test the pack

Check the spark plug first. then if the plug is good you wil need a digital ohm meter to test the coil pack. if you need to know how to remove the coil pack let me know, to test put on ohms should not have more than 2 1/2 ohms restance betweent coil lead to coil connector. If you test the coil pack on both sides of the pack and get a reading then the coil is bad, if it does not read then you haave a bad fireing plate diode.

I need to know how to test the ignition coil on a 1995 jetta

to test the coil you must use an ohm meter and remove the wire connections from the coil, first test the coil from B+ to the center coil wire tower, read the Resistance on the coil and write it down next test between the positive post and to the negitive post read the Resistance next test the negative side to the center post or tower read the resistance there should be no more than 2000 ohms resistance on any test and if it reads 0 resistance it means it's shorted and needs to be replaced, be sure to set the select lever to it's highest ohms resistance level before testing.
