I can use a charger at night to recharge the battery, but car will only run until battery runs out of juice and then it dies. I have replaced the altenator, and had it checked to be sure it was not the problem.

Thanks, I thought that was most likely the problem, but was hoping that it would be something else. The computers are proving to be rather rare, but it looks like I need one.

The problem may be the computer.
Most 1990s Chrysler products used the computer to control the alternator.
You may have to get someone with a shop manual to test the system.

I would try a used one first to make sure. A mechanic can also bypass the computer to test the system.

Some of those cars had a problem with the coils. If you can get a hold of a spark tester, next time your car dies install the tester and see if you are getting spark.

Can a bad alternator cause a battery to die overnight?

A bad alternator no longer charges the battery, the battery will die once it is drained. This will occur more rapidly when using equipment that runs off of the battery( lights, heater blower, windshield wipers etc.) even electronic ignition will run down a battery. Your battery just went over night the alternator may have stopped working long before. Go to an auto parts store that offers free testing to make sure it is your alternator before making repairs.
Good luck.

How do I set the settings on my NAPA automatic starter/charger 85-435 to charge my car battery or to try to quick start my car? I have a 1997 VW Cabriolet.

It is best to "trickle charge" a low/dead car battery using the lowest setting. The "jump start" function will probably not have enough juice to start your car by itself. Refer to the manual of your charger for safety precautions.

1994 LeBaron battery and alternator good but will not charge

Check for power on the large wire at the alternator. this can be done with the engine off. If there is not battery voltage at that wire at the alternator than there is an open circuit beaten the alternator and the batty. If I remember correctly there are fusible links somewhere in that circuit. Either way you'll have to start digging in to see where the problem is on that wire.

Hi Ed, Its always a good idea to run the engine while using any high demand accessory. You may like to have your battery and charge rate checked, but I believe just running the engine will solve the problem for you. Connect everything first, start the engine and then turn on the pump. Regards John

Car starts in the moring everything showing good charging but about 10 to 15 min. car warmed up gage dropes to 8 not charging car dead check battery good what next.

Try charging your battery with a battery charger, then run your engine. If the alternator is good, it will show a slight charge ,but not all the way over. I really don't understand when you say not charging car dead.

2000 Dodge Ram cargo van trouble starting and once started will not keep running tried jumping battery and no change what should we try next?

Sounds like the alternator is bad (not charging). If your battery is good/charged it should run until the battery is drained. If the battery is bad/not charged the car will die as soon as the cables are taken off as there is not enough juice to run the ignition system. If the alternator is good (but battery bad) the car would still run as the alternator makes power to run the car but becasue the battery is dead/drained there is no power to start the car (hense needing the jump). Have the alternator/charging system tested
