Ford Tempo 1993 transmission problem

I have a Ford Tempo 1993, mileage 99,000. Yesterday, I went to drive the car, and I put it in drive as usual, went to pull away and the auto transmission wouldnt shift up the gears; It wouldnt change from first or second on up, so I could only do a speed of about 25 MPH. I found that if I put the car into 2nd gear and pulled away, I could get upto about the same speed, and then shift it into drive that way, that seemed to work! Today though, I've been driving the car around all morning, and I cant make this happen again! That might be good news, but my daughter drives this car, and I dont want her driving it, only for the same thing to happen again. Any suggestions what this might be, or might have been? Is the original problem likely to occur again? Any help would be appreciated. .

I want you to check something. there is 2 cables on the throttle body. 1 cable is to the gas pedal and the other is your a kick down cable . the kick down down in the front of the transmission if you look under the battery it does in the front of the transmission there. see if the kick down moves easy if you open the throttle body by hand. the problem with those transmission is it relis on the cable the shift the gears up . if you steped on the gas pedal that cable is to pull levers inside to up shift. there is not shift solenoids in those transmission. see many in my shop

Unfortunately I'm not physically able to check the cables etc that you mention, but the suggestions sound promising. Would a repair shop look at that forr.

1993 Ford Tempo~Put into reverse Won't go backwards.Put in drive & won't go forward. No tranny problems, no slipping no hard shifting,no noises, no trans fluid leaks,no grinding of gears. Tran fluid full. I have had a couple cars before with bad transmissions &have always had warning signs. Before this happened my check engine light came on for about a month & when I drove my car for about a half hour it seems that it would shake. Any Ideas? Please answer ASAP. I am a girl & am hoping it is not the tranny

SOURCE: seems transmission gear shift problem

Pull the distick and smell the oil. If it's discoloured (black or dark brown) you know the transmission friction plates are burnt and needs a rebuilt.

Hi,

Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .

* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty

SOURCE: Transmission hesitates shifting into second and perhaps third gear when driving slow. When acceleration is positive transmission shifts smoothly. Reference "99 Mercury Transmission" as Subject when

Several things could be causing your problem:

  1. Auto transmission fluid is low
  2. Auto transmission fluid needs changing; this is an area that gets neglected by a lot of people;check the fluid and if its brown or gives off a burning smell, it needs changing. Very old transmission fluid will cause slipping in the transmission; if this is the case, it should be changed along with the filter
Hope you find that this answers your question. Best of luck.
Greg

p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles

I have a 93 Ford Tempo with a 4cyl. 2.3 L engine. It jerks when driving and resists reverse. Just put two qts of transmission fluid in it. Could it be the brakes?

More likely a failed transmission, if it was that low and has been run extensively. When you pulled the dipstick for the transaxle, was the fluid a dirty brown? That could be overheated fluid, a pretty sure sign of imminent failure.
To check the brakes, raise each wheel and check. Spin the rear wheels by hand, have someone step on the brakes and release. Does wheel spin again freely? Check the front wheels the same way: turn wheel by hand, should stop when brake is pressed, and turn again when brake is released.
Auto transmission rebuilds are quite expensive, and used ones are iffy at best. Try to find a used one with low mileage if you have to go that route.

Where is the transmission fluid drain plug on 1993 ford tempo

look on your transmission oil pan if their is not a plug on the pan itself then what your gonna have to do is just take the pan off which means you need to go to your local automotive store and get a new pan seal and while your at it should get a new filter and replace it while you have the pan off.

I went to Ford.com and all I could find for manuals was that the site only allows you to go as far back as 1996.Local libraries usually have haynes manuals you can thumb through. If you plan on keeping your car a long time, you may just want to purchase one. They show EVERYTHING possible. If you are not sure what a haynes manual is,call a local auto parts store. They usually cost about $20-25.I always buy one when I get a new car.
