Question about Ford Tempo
I have a Ford Tempo 1993, mileage 99,000. Yesterday, I went to drive the car, and I put it in drive as usual, went to pull away and the auto transmission wouldnt shift up the gears; It wouldnt change from first or second on up, so I could only do a speed of about 25 MPH. I found that if I put the car into 2nd gear and pulled away, I could get upto about the same speed, and then shift it into drive that way, that seemed to work! Today though, I've been driving the car around all morning, and I cant make this happen again! That might be good news, but my daughter drives this car, and I dont want her driving it, only for the same thing to happen again. Any suggestions what this might be, or might have been? Is the original problem likely to occur again? Any help would be appreciated. .
I want you to check something. there is 2 cables on the throttle body. 1 cable is to the gas pedal and the other is your a kick down cable . the kick down down in the front of the transmission if you look under the battery it does in the front of the transmission there. see if the kick down moves easy if you open the throttle body by hand. the problem with those transmission is it relis on the cable the shift the gears up . if you steped on the gas pedal that cable is to pull levers inside to up shift. there is not shift solenoids in those transmission. see many in my shop

Pull the distick and smell the oil. If it's discoloured (black or dark brown) you know the transmission friction plates are burnt and needs a rebuilt.

Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .
* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty

SOURCE: Transmission hesitates shifting into second and perhaps third gear when driving slow. When acceleration is positive transmission shifts smoothly. Reference "99 Mercury Transmission" as Subject when
Several things could be causing your problem:
p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles
