If you experience oil in the exhaust, there could be one or more reason.

  • The piston rings could be worn out.
  • There could be a ridge in the cylinder lining.
  • it could be that all the ring gaps i.e (Oil and compression rings gaps) were located on one side of the cylinder. Hence the oil is escaping thru the gaps to the combustion chamber..
  • It could be due to worn out valve seals.

Sounds to me like you have a piston seal going out. if your mechanic savey you can take the exhaust manifold off and find the piston that is leaking and fix it your self if not i suggest taking it to the dealer. might be expensive.

Smoke from the exhaust at start up means that the valve seals are leaking oil into the cylinder, smoke when you accellerate means that the piston rings are leaking oil.

Does a 97 dodge ram 1500 have an engine to firewall ground strap and if so can you describe the whereabouts?

My '97 with the 5.9L gas engine does not. It's grounded from the battery to the frame and a ground strap ran from a bolt under the exhaust manifold on the passenger side(near the oil filter) to the frame

My 2000 dodge ram 1500, 5.9 l ,130.000km spends 2.9 l of oil between oil changes but there is no any visable leaks

search dodge engines uses oil problems and you will find that its very common. The dealer will say its normal for the first 50,000 miles then when it doesnt not get better then they will say your warrenty is up. Not much you can do other than spending lots of money to fix it which really means you need a new motor.

dont drive it ,friend oil and coolant are and being forced into the combustion chamber under pressure. if this is a V8 then chrysler havent learnt much over the years ,i had a D5N back in the seventys that used to do this ,you probably need to talk to a current dodge man to find out if it is still the water pump housing ,but i would hope they have solved that problem ,if so it will need a head gasket

1999 Dodge Ram van 1500 no pick up power

I had a similiar problem on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Conversion Van. It ended up being a partial collapse of the catalytic converter which didn't allow adequate exhaust. The problem only showed itself because I could not get over 55 mph going up a small hill.
