Question about 1987 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

I have an 81 Toyota Celica 22R and I started having problems with the car. The Carb was already rebuilt about 6 years ago. I have never had a problem with it before now. It has a rough idle that comes and goes. I floor it and it usually goes away for a few days but then returns. The first time it did this we decided to replace the gas tank and all fuel lines because the old gas tank had alot of rust inside which showed in the fuel filter. Now the filter is nice and clean. After that it ran good for a few months but now the problem comes and goes.

We have done this and it is running great. We just are waiting

to make sure the problem does not return.

(Far cry from what a shop told us- that the carb was worn and needed to be replaced)

    Thanks !!
    It was great advice.

Try running a Can or two of B12 Chemtool through the Fuel system with a Full tank of gas. 1 can per tank. Usually works for me. This will clean the Injectors, Jets, Valves, and ANY Carbon buildup anywhere in there.

Hi, you have the 22R-E engine. This engine was also used in the pick-up and 4-runner. You can read more here:

My question is this I have a 1983 toyota pickup truck with the 22R engine.About a week ago I pulled out ot my drive way and when the motor warm up it started to run rough and black soot was coming from my...

black soot is a running rich condition it's getting to much gas not enough air .. 14-1 ratio air to gas your carb rebuild needs to be rechecked for sticking float..

Toyoat Hard to start

I recommend to remove carb and send to a specialist to have rebuilt or reconditioned. Cleaning it may not be enough. A carb that old may need to be serviced. This would be your starting point. The service shop can test it "outside" of vehicle.

Toyota 22r starts hard and floods. Repalced

It sounds like the carb. float is set to high and /or the needle and seat has some dirt in it allowing to much fuel inside the carb.. This will allow to much fuel into the engine. It seems the carb could use a rebuild and dont forget to replace your fuel filter.I hope this helps.

Need to change engines

If you have a 22r carbed then all 22r carbed engines from 1981-1995 will interchange. You may need to use sensor out of your old engine however. The 20r,22r,22re,22ret all have the same mounts and tranny bolt patterns. how ever there are lot of differences. you can swap from a 22r to a 22re but you must also swap the entire vehical wiring harness to do it right. if you have a 3.0L i would keep the same engine. some people have swap to the tacoma 3.6L but that is a expensive swap not exsactly bolt on so to say. If you have a 22re then stay with the 1986-1987 22re because the newer 22re use different computers, electronics ,sensors and more.. Same story with the 22ret. I hoped this helped.

ROUGH IDLE

You have rust particles in the float bowl. The easiest thing to do is remove the side cover of the carb (the thing that unbolts, with a sight-glass on it) and spray carb cleaner into the float bowl until it is clean.
