Start with the basic tune-up stuff, new plugs, use carb cleaner spray in the throttle body and idle jets. Check for vaccum leaks on all the hoses that connect to intake manifold.

No power after shifting and hitting passing gear just put in new plugs

Your vehicle is old enough to have old and brittle Vaccum Lines.... Buy a few feet of Vaccum hose and cut one piece at a time and replace all the vaccum lines on your entire engine. Never take a whole hose off completely when you do this. Only take one end off at a time, plug in the new hose, then do the same with the other end. Vaccum hoses are a major hidden "Problem Creator" that is over looked all too often.. It is a cheap fix, a often solution to solve your problem as described. Good luck...

How do I trace vacuum problem... it is none going to my 2000 malibu hvac control. can I check underhood?

If you think you have a vaccum problem, the best thing to do is replace all the vaccum hoses. As you replace the tubes, do not take both ends off at the same time. Never take two hoses off at the same time. ONLY ONE END AT A TIME. Then replace that end, run the hose, cut it and stick it on.... You have a nine year old car, and that is not unheard of to have vaccum problems, and hunting is next to impossible. It is just cheaper and faster to replace them all and then you KNOW what you got.. "That Problem Has Been Eliminated" if you chasing another symptom.

Buick skylark 3100 unstable idle

Unstable idle can be caused by a vaccum leak. Best way to find a vaccum leak I have found is to
take a tube ( fuel hose or 1/4 inch vaccum line 2 or 3 ft long ) and put one end to your ear and use
the other end to probe around the engine intake manifold area and where ever vaccum lines connect
as well as along each vaccun line to ck for breaks or splits. Another method is to use WD40 to spray
around manifold an vaccun lines. This method usually will ( if there is a leak ) stablize the idle and
cause the idle to increase. Or you can use carb cleaner or startind fluid but these are quite volital and
can cause a fire. So be very careful how you use them. The WD 40 is unlikely to catch fire that is why I RECOMEND IT. With the tube method you will hear a hissing or sucking sound when you find a vaccun leak. Good luck.
