Hi lovekhaos, With the engine not running see if it will go into gear, if you have the clutch pushed in and have it in gear and try to start it, the car will jump forward and try to take off, be very careful, the clutch is not necessarily bad it could be the hydraulics that engage the clutch. Let me know what you find and I can help more. Please rate this solution. lone99star

With the car not running and it still wont go in gear it is not the clutch, You said the shifter is loose, this is an idication for broken linkage or worse case scenario bad gears in the transmission. I believe at this point unless you are willing to start taking the shifter apart you will need to have it looked at by a mechanic. lone99star

Why wont my 1990 geo tracker will not go into gear

Has to be a clutch problem, either a sticky clutch plate out of adjustment,if it is a hydralic clutch it could be low on fluid or have air in line. If it has a clutch cable reduce the free travel at the clutch fork to 1/4 in. Travel.

No you can't adjust this problem. You have a problem with your hydraulic portion of your clutch or your pressure plate so you need to get it fixed.
