Your best bet is to look into timing belt either breaking or jumping teeth.

Check the following website. www.kiatechinfo.com you have to sign up but this is direct from kia.

Sounds like a timing belt issue. Either jumped its timing or broke timing belt.

My 99 neon timing belt did not break but has worn out and my car quit runing

when the teeth on the inside of your belt come off, the belt can not pull on the sprockets any more. therefore your engine is out of time and it would not start

Timing belt jumped... why?

This can be caused by not tensioning the belt corectly. When fitting a new belt you should allways replace the tensioner, and make sure the water pump pulley is in good working order. Its always wise to get your timming belt from the dealer.as others are nown to be faulty.Fit new belt follow manuel when doing so.good luck

Timing belt

Did it run before you di the timing belt?

Jumped timing?

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.
