1999 Saturn SL1 goe through has starter problems

My 1999 Saturn SL1 has 170,000 miles on it, and had worked consistently well for the past 9 years. However, starting this past summer, it has started to have severe complications with the starter. At first, we found that the solenoid in the original starter had gone bad, and therefore replaced it with a remanufactured starter, the car then worked for a week, and then thi starter also died. We replaced it once more because of this, and then this new starter also had an issue. It seems to not catch the flywheel, and all you can hear when you turn the key is the starter motor whirring. We replaced it once more, and it has worked consistently for the past two weeks. However, it once again is not catching the flywheel, and all I hear when I turn the key is the whirring of the starter motor. Does anyone know what this problem may be? It would be extremely appreciated.

1998 SL1 about 125,000km...battery is fine, when cold, it will not start. Not even a noise when turning the key. Then, after perhaps 15-25 key turns it starts out of the blue!!! It seems to have the problem when not turned on for a few hours....my mechanic is not sure either....help????

The difference for mine is the lack of any noise when turning the key.

Try getting a new fly wheel installed in your car because it soulds like you have a few ground down spots on it. my buddies saturn had this problem with the starter and he had to change the flywheel and it has worked ever since and that was 2 years ago.

Single click? More battery is needed. Id change the battery, or slow charge it.
Might also be the security system shutting down the starter. Common on GM vehicles. Heres a link on that. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

i think i know what ur problem is, i think its the relay to ur starter, not the starter itself. if there is a clicking sound when u turn the key that usually means that the relay to the starter is bad. hope this helps u

this is caused by burnt starter solenoid contacts, U can either replace the starter solenoid contacts (about $15) or u can replace the entire starter.

98 saturn sl1 won't start

if you have good battery voltage at this time, and when you banged on the starter and then the car cranked over, it would appear you have a defective starter. i would imagine if you replaced it in july of last year that it could still be under some sort of warranty, so i would look into that. either way, it sounds as if you need a new starter.

Sounds like you have one of two problems. If the car has over 80,000 miles on the odometer, your idle air control motor (basically an electrical solenoid valve which allows additional air into the motor past the closed throttle valve) is sticking open.
The other possibility is a vacuum leak. I would try removing the IAC (idle air control motor) and cleaning it using aerosol carb or throttle body cleaner. This is available at any auto parts store. Re-install the valve and see if there is an improvement. If it improves but reverts to it's old behavior (usually within a day to a week) you will need to replace the valve.
