Just did this last night, If you remove the bolt holding the radiator overflow tank and set it out of the way it is much easier. Still a PITA but easier. It might also be helpfull to jack it up slightly. I can fit underneath to work on it but most people will not be able to. Use a stand or block of wood for safety of course. The tensioner will have to move upwards to get the belt on. A second person would be best so you can get a full stroke on the pulley and slip the belt on. It is possible with a single person but...yeah PITA.

Ok, FixYa does not allow edits so this was a 2010 Mitshubishi Lancer GTS with a 2.4 engine. The belt used was a Gates K061010. I routed the belt most of the way, the biggest pain was when loosening the tensioner was my hand pushing on the belt and causing it to fall off the rearmost pulley. I ended up taking it off the top pulley, using my thumb to hold the belt uder the idle pulley above the tensioner, then used a "flat" gearwrench to lift the tensionerand was able to get the wrench to hang on the bolt of the top idle pulley so I could do the final adjustments. Seriously though get a buddy to help....

SOURCE: serpentine belt diagram:

The belt routing diagram is located on the top radiator cross member by the hood latch. You should see it when you open the hood. If it is not there, all Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth minivans, from 1993 to at least 1999, used the same 3.3L engine setup, so find someone with one and look for the diagram where I described.

The serpentine belt routing should be labeled on your radiator shroud. Look around the engine compartment like the hood or radiator fram suport and there should be a label with the the belt routing.
Good luck and hope this helps

I am trying to hange the serpentine belt on my 09 lancer rallyart and it keeps slipping off

Locate the two belts on the left side (passenger side) of your Mitsubishi Lancer. The outer belt is a serpentine belt, operating four pulleys and the inner belt is your alternator belt.

  • 2 Follow the serpentine (outer) belt to the three pulleys lined up vertically near the front of the engine compartment. Locate the middle pulley, which is the tension pulley for the belt.
  • 3 Loosen the bolt on the middle pulley with a socket wrench by turning counter-clockwise. Do not remove the bolt, just turn it a couple of times. Loosen the tensioner bolt on the side of the of the pulley, facing the front of the vehicle.
  • 4 Remove the serpentine belt and then loosen the bolt on the alternator. With the alternator loose, move it forward so that the alternator belt loosens up and then remove belt from the pulleys.
  • 5 Install the new alternator belt by placing it over both inside pulleys. Tighten the tension on the alternator belt by moving the alternator back and keeping tension on it by holding it back with a long screwdriver. While the alternator belt is tight, use a socket wrench to tighten up the bolt on the alternator.
  • 6 Place the serpentine belt back on the pulleys and then use a socket wrench on the bolt on the front of the tension pulley. Once the serpentine belt is tight, tighten up the bolt in the middle of the tension pulley.
  • 7 Start the Mitsubishi Lancer's engine to test the alternator belt and make sure it is working properly. Once you have verified it is working, turn the engine off.

How to loosen alternator tension on a 2003 Lancer

I have not seen this vehicle but, the center bolt or nut that holds the tensioner to the block is backed off two turns first.
Then the adustment bolt (most are accesed from under the vehicle) can be adjusted to give enough slack to install the new belt.
If this is still too tight, remove one of the two or two of the three bolts that mount the Alternator to allow for another 1/8" and install the belt.
    Then remount the Alternator.
    Then readjust the tension bolt.
Finish with the bolt or nut that mounts the tensionor to the block.
    good luck.
