Yes, the pressure lever cable will keep the trans from going into lockup. Nothing will happen if you can't shift to overdrive.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hello angela.... the transmission is the most complex part of the automobile. go to any AAMCO shop and they will take a look at it and give you a free estimate. you are correct to assume that the broken ring is behind your problem...replacing that ring requires special tools and knowhow, it is definitely not a home repair. I replaced the snap ring and retainer because they were both broke and still no luck with overdrive working

Overdrive would not engage at 35+ mph. Took trans pan off, removed filter, dropped valve body out. Found broken snap ring on overdrive servo. Removed and replaced snap ring. Opened valve body and found 1 of the broken pieces stuck in a valve. Replaced all valve body gaskets. Put valve body back in with 95 in/lbs torque. Put in new filter. Pan on with 120 in/lbs or 10 ft/lbs. Refill with trans fluid. Run through gears. Lower vehicle. Test drive.

Found broken snap ring in trans oil pan

I suggest it would be a good idea to remove the transmission for inspection before possible extensive damage occurs.
While it may drive ok for a while, it is likely it may fail under certain load conditions.

1998 Dodge Ram 4X4 Quad 5.9L Auto. When accelerating slowly, shift fine until up to a cruizing speed, then keeps shifting up & down like into/out of a passing gear. Going up hill under a slight load...

Mr. dodge ram, with the 46re trans the pcm needs a signal from the tps sensor to monitor throtlle opening, accel and decel, what has happened the tps has a worn out spot in cruise area, hence the down shift, uphill is fine because your past the worn out spot, replace your tps sensor, its mount on left side of throtlle body , 2 screws, 1 connecter, and its out, when done turn key on, eng off, step on gas pedal 6 times slowly, then turn off key, this will help set min tps setting, GOOD LUCK RDJRP

My 2001 f250 when shifting out of overdrive its not a solid shift! it seems to flutter into overdrive. the truck has 75000 original miles, 1 owner. under extreme acceleration it shifts fine.

has the trans ever been serviced? it should have the fluid and filter changed every 60,000 miles, this may help if it hasn't been done, also check for clutch mud in the pan of the trans..

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.
