Question about Cars & Trucks

Engine light came on 2000 toyota avalon. auto zone said error code indicated it needed a new charcoal canister for emissions. today, car sounds ruff as if valves are knocking and wanting to stop at low speed. stopped again to have checked and was told the entire catalytic converter system, including everything that runs to it, is failing. can this actually cause the car to run so ruff that it sounds like the valves are knocking?

Take the vehicle to a close by local repair shop, that has been
in the same place & same owner for 25 years or more

The chain store places aren't what you need

You need a proper diagnoses of the entire cars engine etc

your O2 sensor up stream is gone and the engine is sucking air probably your pcv valve hose and is sucking oil straight into head and out D tail pipe! you have some good looking over to do on this by the sounds of it but do you notice oil missing a lot or do you bother to check and I would do a compression check on it before I spend any more cash on it!!! so start with compression test! see specks on line for suggested test pounds 145 pound per cylinder???net

SOURCE: car dies when driving, check engine light comes on.

There is a good chance it could be your fuel pump , however if the check engine light is coming on and the dealer cant tell you what is wrong , try a different dealer or another shop. Second opinions never hurt.

SOURCE: The check engine light keeps coming on for a 1998 Toyota Avalon.

Did you buy the universal replacement sensor where you use the plug off of the old sensor and the splice kit? If so, that is most likely the issue. Had the same problem on a 2003 Avalon. Bought the ones with the plug and codes cleared. ps. Check, lots less expensive.

I went to an auto parts store 'cause my check engine light and vsc light came on, on my 2006 Toyota Avalon-Touring. I bought a new gas cap a couple days ago. The light is still on.

You may have a loose hose in the evap system.
see the diagram below. The evap purge valve is on top of the engine as indicated. There should be a small diameter hose connected there. That hose runs under the car all the way to the charcoal canister, which is on top of the fuel tank. Check the hose for damage. If you can, check to see if it is connected to the canister and check the canister for damage as well.

As with most cars today your car is fitted with a charcoal filled canister to trap fuel vapour emissions before they are released to the environment. In order to burn this temporarily stored vapour the engine computer opens a purge valve that is connected by a vacuum tube to the inlet manifold of the engine. The valve is only opened when the engine has warmed up. With the valve open outside air is drawn into and through the charcoal canister to carry the fuel rich vapours down the vacuum tube into the engine to be burnt. In your car the purge valve is being left open permanently and this means your car is struggling with all the extra air entering the engine. Solution: find the tube connected between the inlet manifold and the charcoal canister and disconnect it and block both open ends temporarily (duct tape) so that nothing can pass through it . This is only a temporary solution until you can replace or repair the faulty purge valve. When repaired open the vacuum tube connection again.

Check Engine light on giving code P0441, what to replace or do?

Evaporative emissions control system malfunction detected. Traceable to either loose gas cap, contaminated charcoal caniter, stuck ccv valve or leak in the vacuum control system.

My 1999 toyota corolla check engine is on for a year.I took it to smog test and they said it will fail the test. What should I do now? How can I turn the light off?

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • Bad vacuum switch
  • Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
  • Open in PCM purge command circuit
  • Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Faulty purge solenoid
  • Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
  • Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
  • Bad PCM Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
What does that mean? This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister
, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
EVAP emission canister purge is contolled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank
into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.

Po441 emissions code for a 2000 Avalon - just wondering some possibilities on what it might be and what it will cost.

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly.

FIRST, call the local Toyota dealer, tell them the error and your mileage. It MAY be covered under warranty as part of the emissions system, which many manufacturers have extended warranty programs on at no cost to you.

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • Bad vacuum switch
  • Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
  • Open in PCM purge command circuit
  • Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Faulty purge solenoid
  • Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
  • Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
  • Bad PCM

With a P0441 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Repair damaged EVAP lines or canister
  • Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Repair open in PCM purge command circuit
  • Replace purge Solenoid
  • Replace vacuum switch
  • Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or soleniod
  • Repair resistance in purge connector
  • Replace PCM

Can the charcoal canister on a 2000 toyota avalon xls be cleaned or repaired

It can only be replaced. The charcoal canister is just like a filter. Usually, emission parts have a warranty and that it's suppose last a certain amount of years. I would check with the dealer with this issue.
