2002 gmc sierra wont shift into 2nd gear

In my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 4.8l my trans seems like it will not shift into 2nd gear. first gear revs up to around 3000 rpms before shifting and will not shift at wide open throttle. all the other gears are fine and trans fluid is filled. seems like it just skips 2nd also when i pin it what i believe is to be in 3rd gear it will skip 2nd and go straight to first. i have no idea what it could be. feedback is appreciated

SOURCE: hard shifting

U may have a dirty valve body passage, have u changed the trans fluid and filter in the last 60,000 miles,. if no do and use the new GM Dexron VI trans fluid, it has greatly improved shift characteristic's and has the best detergent property out there to keep the trans clean. I have personnel experience with this fluid in my 96, I was amazed.

SOURCE: tranny will not shift into dr or od

This has a 4l60e trans. There is no "passing gear cable" it is all electonic. I would recomed making sure the filter did not fall down into the pan. When you removed the old filter there should have been a fitting on the end of it like the one you installed with the new filter a rubber seal set up that slips onto the snout of the filter. These usualy don't come out when you pull the old filter out you have to remove them with a tool.(a pic will work if you are careful) I have seen this happen before where a person did not remove the old fitting and this allowed the filter to drop into the pan.If you did change the fitting out I would still check to make sure the filter has not dropped. If the filter is ok then you have another problem. There is a switch on the driver side of the trans that the shifter linkage is connected to this may need to be adjusted. It is not hard to adjust but I recomend getting yourself a chilton or haynes manual from a local parts store for about $20 It will be a big help for ya.
Have a great evening.

My 1990 automatic GMC Sierra wont shift out of 2nd, it just revs higher and higher. Any advice? (It will shift from 1st to 2nd when I take my foot off the gas)

Check your transmission fluid, if it is low, the transmission cannot shift into the correct gear from lack of hydraulic pressure. Be sure to check it while the truck is running.

If it is full, you may need to change the fluid and filter; over time the fluid will break down and trash the filter leading to low pressure problems which is why your truck fails to shift any more than 2nd.

Another problem may be that the torque converter is failing to lock yet again from lack of hydraulic pressure or its just worn out.

My 95 GMC sierra shifts fine into every gear but 2nd, If I rev the rpms up and let them fall and hit the gas again then it will sift into second and so on, any ideas on how to fix this problem

1-2 shift does not happen at WOT until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Double check by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise.

Put a line pressure gauge ($55 shipped on Ebay, or visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.490" boost valve (easy fix in pan)

Thank you for using fixya and keep us posted.

I have a 2000 GMC sierra 2500 truck. The guy I bought it from had a new transmition put in it. After driving a while I noticed that the tranny wouldn't shift into low gears 1st & 2nd on comand. and...

-----check possible tps [throttle position sensor ]circuit for damage or faulty sensor----if good check the fuses and trans harness for shorts damage or disconnection, check o2 sensors wiring possible ground to exhaust ,or internal leak 2nd gear apply circuit[servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator] or poor pump pressure
