I is against federal law to not release all generic data to the public & all enhanced data for your snappy scan tool since 1996 OBD2 Systems cam out & the connector has to be close to the same location on all vehicles sold in north america ( us & canada)

There is also a Magneson something or other law that has been around for decades that allow you to work on your own car including emissions. Were close to a communist country but not quite there yet

Not that I am aware of.
Sounds like a problem with the computer or the circuit to the OBD plug.

SOURCE: check engine light came on tested with obd 2

IF you can find the sensor (and can get to it) it is just an unplug, unscrew (use correct wrench) and then install new one and plug it back in. You will have to get the computer reset after that or the light will come back on

What is a scan tool

A scan tool allows for the OBD II (On Board Diagnostics) codes to be read from the engine computer in a car. These are common electronic diagnostics tools used by automotive technicians. They are usually used when a check engine light comes on to determine the error codes associated with the check engine light.

They almost always connect via a standard plug on the divers side under the dash.

Most automotive parts supplier will check a car with complementary service to determine the codes stored in a customers automobile.

What diagnostic socket have I got, after diagnostic tool

Question doesn't make sense. Explain more fully. What diagnostic tool do you have? I've never heard of a diagnostic socket. Do you mean the OBD connector? All models from 1996 on use a universal connector, called an OBD-II connector. On Board Diagnostics- since 1996, all vehicles sold in the USA are required to have the same connector. Fits any OBD scanner or code reader.

Et1505an code reader comes up with link error every time i try to scan my 04 f-150 is it the scanner or my truck if it is my truck what is the cause. How would I fix it ?

The only way to find out if it is the code reader or the truck is to plug in another code reader or scan tool and see if it gives you the same results (try this first).

NOTE: Generic OBD code readers will operate ONLY on the Class 2 data link. A true scan tool will operate on BOTH the Class 2 and the UART lines. Accessing the onboard computer system with a scan tool may give you a fault code that indicates that the Class 2 circuits may be malfunctioning.

To diagnose onboard computer network communications malfunctions, the proper equipment that can communicate with the ENTIRE network must be used. Please note that generic OBD code readers cannot perform this function.

Code reader will not make a connection with the cars computer

do you have a OBD-I reader ! from 96 and before are OBD-I, 96 on up are OBD-II scanners.c hecking trouble codes from your 1994 GM vehicle does not require the use of special equipment, such as a scan tool.

Where is the fuse for check engine light

You really need to include make and model, engine, etc. as well as the OBD code reading you are getting; with the other information available, you should be able to do a search on your vehicle + the error code and get an idea of what you still need to do.

How do you retrieve codes from 1990 ford taurus gl without dianostic computer. trying to help niece with car she bought. she can't afford to take into shop

You can buy a cheap dongle (less then $40 -- http://www.autoditto.com/cheap-obd-ii-scanner.html) (at Canadian Tire, and I think Walmart) where it'll tell you what error code is activated and then you can erase all codes along with a few other options, nice to have if you use it a lot. Otherwise the shop is the next place (Unless you know someone with an OBD II reader -- which is a more deluxe version then what I was explaining previously)
OR
You can DIY for $6 using http://hackaday.com/2007/11/07/inexpensive-pic-based-obd-2-interface/

Obd 2 connector does not work with any code scanner

HI there....Check to see if the code reader is a CAN OBD 2 code reader. If it is only OBD2 , that may be the problem. In 2003 Some vehicle manufacturers ( ford,Gm,Mazda and Saab) began using a new computer protocol called Controller Area Network (CAN) with the OBD2 and if your vehicle is CAN OBD 2 the simple OBD2 code reader will not work.Contact your local dealer to determine if you vehicle is CAN or not or find a code reader that is CAN OBD2 capable. Hope this helps you out
