I have had this problem before. I changed the plug wires and the plugs, and it seemed to help.
Good Luck!

Fix my random miss fire on my cadillac el 2000

Have to diagnose the cylinder misfire problem

You could buy a couple new ignition coils & walk
on cylinder at a time & take a week or more to
find the bad coil or two,IF that is the problem or
only problem

That is why they make professional tools & you pay
big money, for the learned knowledge, to just find theses
issues

Some general thoughts - -
when you try to accelerate, a couple of things happen. The engine shifts sometimes, and you put it under a load unlike when it is idling.
Is it possible a wiring harness or a hose is moving when you accelerate ? Is it possible the fuel pressure or ignition module is not good enough to handle the engine under load ? Is the EGR opening early or something causing a vac leak and a lean fuel mixture ?

Random mulitple misfire

A random miss-fire is almost impossible to diagnose.
You are dealing with fuel and ignition so there is a long list of causes.
You may have to wait until it becomes a solid miss on one cylinder.
a mechanic would need to be able to make the problem happen to find it.

Check out the AboutAutomobile.com site for NHTSA complaints. I believe there was a defect in the cylinder heads for this engine. The redesigned heads have a different suffix letter than the stock heads.

For a time, the Manufactuer was paying for the repair.

1996 VW Passat - Random cylinder miss fire, worse

Pop the heed, see the air box on the very left? On top of that box is the Ignition Control Unit. Little black square w/ winds about 1/2"
thick....

That is the problem. Or Your MAF sensor...
I don't know how to chech the Ignition Control Unit with out the proper tester.

But the MAF is located directly below in side the box.
If you POP off the large hose that comes out of the front of the air box. You can see the MAF, spreay it some contact cleaner for electronics not BREAK CLEANER>>>>>>.

Now change the distributor. Get one from salvage or e-bay. Did the timing belt jumped a tooth or is it new. Vitally
