I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

I have a 89 jeep wrangler 4.2 with peugeot transmission ...I just bought jeep it started but makes a grinding sound like the starter bad then all sudden it won't crank...so I got new starter replaced...

recheck the parts to be the correct ones because what you are describing is a gear mesh problem. ensure the gear on the starter matches those gear teeth on the flywheel. once you know they are matching and are correct for that year and size of engine, you will need a variety of shims to set the distance between the two correctly. (which you already have experience at). But it is important you have the correct starter because the solenoid and the throw-out spring are specific made to travel a set distance. If that distance is not far/long enough the gear will not full engage the width/thickness of the flywheel tooth/teeth (which causes the starter gear to strip those teeth of the back side of flywheel). SO you need to do some serious looking at those parts and the meshing when solenoid is engaging.

Grinding starter on my 1988 Ford Bronco II

the sound you hear is the starter grinding against broken teeth on the flywheel, for that to be repaired the flywheel on the vehicle will need to be replaced.

My starter

The flywheel doesn't usually grind into the flywheel it's usually the other way around. The starter upon trying to crank the engine over will make a grinding noise. This is the sign of a bad starter drive in the starter and it will need a new starter. The longer you wait on getting this repaired the more damage will be done to the flywheel and this is a very costly repair because the motor and transmission needs to be seperated apart from each other to pull the flywheel out and replaced.
Hope this helps keep, us posted.

1984 s10 2.8 manual trans. flywheel causes engine to vibrate

no should be same engine. check your engine mounts and tranny mount. how bad a vibration? sometimes after installing engine the trans gets shifted around and if mount was worn it will allow it to hit crossmeber and vibrate.
