Question about 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
The engine will start but won't stay on. We've changed the spark plugs and the air pressure gage but nothing. It automatic and I was driving in 1 2 3 gear instead of automatic for a bit and may have ruined it from that point because the car wouldn't start then finally had to carefully drive it home and the next day it wouldn't stay on at all. What should I check now to fix it.
Which engine? How many miles/kms? Is the Engine light on?
Put the old s-plugs back and connect a scanner and see what's going on.

I had the same symptoms and found I had suffered from turbo failure and the final cost at the dealer was $3500, last VW I will ever own. I hope this isn't your trouble too, good luck

Guys, what you are experiencing is the car built warning system. When your engine light blinks it indicates a Major Problem has occurred or is occurring in the engine. When this occurs the cars goes into a "safe," mode which means all power is cut by at least half in an effort to save the car from more major damage. You can take your VW to any large chain autoparts store (autozone, advance, etc) a lot of them are offering a free engine diagnosis. Do this if possible to see where the problems maybe coming from and ways to fix them.

problem one is the timer control for the heaters ,also check the heaters that they are working ,oil problem ? look under the rubber boot that goes over the oil switch ,pull it back and if oil under the cover renew the oil switch, these motors do suffer from heater light flashing on and i know people have spent megabucks trying to cure it ,its a fault with dash and printed circuits ,but the heaters are not coming on i know because i have driven one with the heater circuit light coming on and i had a extended light on a long wire and the heaters are not coming on ,ignore it just renew the faulty glow plugs,as for EGR valve just pull teh vacumn pipe off the ERG valve and leave disconnect ,more hassle than its worth changing it ,you could end up with a ECU computer .Still a nice reliable motor though and economical

Testimonial: "Thanks for your usefull answer. Afer I stop the engine 2 times from EGR valve, both board alarms have been reseted. What does it mean? Thanks again."
I am having the exact same problem with my VW Touareg @60,000 miles. Two weeks ago and again today it sputters and stalls shortly after starting. I brought it into the shop and they could not reproduce the problem and said it was fine. Also, they had no ideas when I describes the problem. Anyone know what it going on? I am out of warranty.
