Question about 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Engine won't stay on

The engine will start but won't stay on. We've changed the spark plugs and the air pressure gage but nothing. It automatic and I was driving in 1 2 3 gear instead of automatic for a bit and may have ruined it from that point because the car wouldn't start then finally had to carefully drive it home and the next day it wouldn't stay on at all. What should I check now to fix it.

Which engine? How many miles/kms? Is the Engine light on?
Put the old s-plugs back and connect a scanner and see what's going on.

Guys, what you are experiencing is the car built warning system. When your engine light blinks it indicates a Major Problem has occurred or is occurring in the engine. When this occurs the cars goes into a "safe," mode which means all power is cut by at least half in an effort to save the car from more major damage. You can take your VW to any large chain autoparts store (autozone, advance, etc) a lot of them are offering a free engine diagnosis. Do this if possible to see where the problems maybe coming from and ways to fix them.

SOURCE: Skoda Octavia Ambiente 2004 1.9 tdi, automatic

problem one is the timer control for the heaters ,also check the heaters that they are working ,oil problem ? look under the rubber boot that goes over the oil switch ,pull it back and if oil under the cover renew the oil switch, these motors do suffer from heater light flashing on and i know people have spent megabucks trying to cure it ,its a fault with dash and printed circuits ,but the heaters are not coming on i know because i have driven one with the heater circuit light coming on and i had a extended light on a long wire and the heaters are not coming on ,ignore it just renew the faulty glow plugs,as for EGR valve just pull teh vacumn pipe off the ERG valve and leave disconnect ,more hassle than its worth changing it ,you could end up with a ECU computer .Still a nice reliable motor though and economical

SOURCE: Engine stalls while driving. Fuel deprivation?

I am having the exact same problem with my VW Touareg @60,000 miles. Two weeks ago and again today it sputters and stalls shortly after starting. I brought it into the shop and they could not reproduce the problem and said it was fine. Also, they had no ideas when I describes the problem. Anyone know what it going on? I am out of warranty.

Car won't start or engine turn over until tried 5 times or more

Check fuel pressure at motor with a gauge or scan tool data ,
if that is avail & see if it holds when pump is off

You have to change spark plugs every 3 years, change air filter & clean maf sensor once a year

If your combining your explanation of the problem,
then maybe you just have a bad battery

Stalled & won't start

Hi there:
You will have to pinpoint what the engine is missing... Spark / Fuel / Compression

All three of these are tested when the engine is being cranked over. There are two way of checking for fuel. Fuel pressure and fuel trigger. Both are very important and must be present for the engine to start. Fuel pressure is self explanatory. You just hook up the gage and see what the reading is. Fuel trigger is check with a noid light. The injector gets unplugged and the noid light gets plugged in to the injector clip. With the engine cranking over, this light must blink. This is the signal to the injectors from the computer. You can have all the fuel pressure in the world, but it wont matter if the injector is not pulsing gas into the cylinder like it should.

Compression tester, spark tester, fuel pressure gage and noid light are all accessible at your local auto store. All three tests play a very important part in diagnosing a no start condition. Be extremely careful when doing these tests.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

My Mazda 626 is a 2001 LX 4cyl my problem is that the engine turns but won't start it sounds like it wants to start at times but doesent,I've already chekd for spark has good spark I've checks...

and engine needs fuel, spark and air to run. If you are sure you have fuel and spark, the timing is the last thing to check. Your engine is provided with external alignment marks. take out all of your plugs, and by hand, turn your engine over until you see your harmonic balancer (pulley your belt is on at the bottom of the engine/crank) alignment marks meet with the marks on the engine block. Next you need to look at your cam gears. You might have to pull a plastic cover, or the valve cover off to see the cam gears. The cam gears have alignment marks as well. If all marks line up together at the same time, timing is not the issue. the timing belt is an iffy design. The timing belt tensioner could be warn out and only show signs or being warn out every now and then. your tensioner could have loosened up, caused your belt to jump, and clamp back again.

I have a 1993 honda accord that will start but won't stay cranked...what's wrong?

A few things to check:

Wrong spark plugs installed - causing too many misfires
Timing problem - the ECC (Engine Control Computer) will give up after a short while if it cannot get the engine to operate in correct time
clogged fuel filter
clogged air filter
clogged fuel strainer
worn distributor cap/rotor
failing fuel pump
vacuum leak
faulty ECC (Engine Control Computer)
ignition coil failing - the ECC will stall the engine if too many misfires are detected.
wireset - faulty spark plug wire(s) causing too many misfires.
faulty fuel pressure regulator
EGR valve faulty

If the engine is misfiring alot, it will **** the resulting unburned fuel out the exhaust pipe, so check for this as well.
