Question about 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

1 Answer

Can thermostat stuck open on 2001 vw beetle affect automatic transmission performance?

Sometimes transmission shifts perfectly, other times starts off in drive3 from standing start and will not hit o.d. when it's acting up, i can manually shift from 1 to 2 to 3 and it shifts very smoothly, but still no 4 (od) even when putting shifter in 'D' it stays in 3rd. Dealer said it was 'speed controller problem (very expensive of course) yet about 50% of the time it works beautifully. I was curious if 'engine temp' could affect shifting control, since i know my thermostat is stuck open. Thank You in advance.

for example 'check engine' light comes on, untill you get below 1/4 tank of gas, then it goes out (and will pass emissions test) untill you put more gas in the dam%^%# thing.... go figure........

all vw cars have a computer on board that controls a fuzzylogic gearbox.the racier you drive the higher the revs before upchange and vise versa ie low/low change so the harder you drive the more noticable the gearshift will be in auto mode.manual mode will always be jerky compared to a std auto box.THE JOYS OF NEW TECHNOLOGY.....

There is an electrical malfunction in the EV5 solenoid electrical circuit. You must go to Advance Auto or Autozone and borrow their scan tool and get the code.

Sounds like a shift solenoid . See if you can order them separate from the valve body. I would call a vw dealer and talk with the service department.

THE 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find one threaded plug on below surface, (follow red arrow in the picture below). This is for emptying.

The oil level threaded plug is placed on the car front lateral automatic gearbox surface, (follow yellow arrow in the picture below).

The filling oil plug is placed on the upper automatic gearbox surface, (follow green arrow in the picture below).

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking:
1. Requirements for check:
1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface.
1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.
1.7. Automatic gearbox oil capacity: 2,5 liter. Only ATF with VW designation may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives.
1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.

2001 vw beetle automatic transmission will not shift into overdrive at highway speeds. why?

I have a 2001 Beetle, the transmisson seen to have a pause and then engage when driving normaly and it's worst on the hills, after driving a distance it smells some kind of quemical that is not oil or gas, the beeping sound and the engine light on the dashboard goes on when stopping (may be the motor) and the temperature blue light goes on constantly. Are all of this related? to transmission? separate issues? The dealer and 2 other private mecanics don't give a perfect diagnosys they are all the time guessing. What's wrong? please advice.

My 1999 VW new beetle stalls when it warms up. This has happened 5 times now. There is a temperature light that goes out when engine is warm. If I let the car sit for half hour or so it will start again....

The thermostat on your volkswagon helps the engine keep operating at a predetermined temperature for best fuel economy and engine performance. However, the thermostat mechanism wears down after months of use and subsequently fails. If stuck in the closed position, the thermostat will not allow coolant to circulate, causing the engine to heat up dangerously; if stuck in the open position, the engine will never reach proper operating temperature, causing fuel consumption and poor engine performance. In either case, the thermostat must be replaced. Its fairly cheap

I have 2001 vw beetle and my transmission surgers... what can i do for it

On some volkswagen Transmissions you can reset the computers shift plan by doing the following. Starting with car off in park, turn ignition to ON (but do not start) then depress the gas pedal for at least 3 seconds, then shut the car off, start and drive. This resets the computer's shifting plan for some VW's and you can expect some hard shifts after this reset, but it may help with funny shifting. The afore stated speed sensor is also a possible culprit.

Depends on if the vehicle is a automatic transmission or a Stick shift. If it is an automatic could be the neutral safety switch, if it is a stick shift could be the safety switch at the clutch pedal. Hope this helps.

2001 vw cabrio automatic transmission

I'm dealing with the same car. I just had the transmission completely overhauled. Very$$$. The mechanic told me that it's common for cabrio's to develop this problem between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, mine happened around 95,000 miles. Knowing what I know now, I would have sold it.
