We had a recent theft attempt and when a forced entry is attempted the security system locks up the entire car. The front kne bolster was broken and hanging the our key would not fit in the ignition anymore. We had it lift towed to the dealer. The dealer replaced the ignitiona nd knee bolster we received the car back and the horn wouldn't work our battery went dead from due to the seat trying to move back into memory position. We took it back to the dealer and the dealer syas it needs a new battery and an airbag? That the car appeared not to be of a theft attempt just normal problems that go wrong with this car. They wanted to charge almost 1000.00 to replace the airbag and said this would corrrect thehorn fuse from blowing also. So there you the entire story. What is your opinion/diganosis of this?

We purchased an airbag yesterday and upon putting all back together we noticed that the key ignition that the dealer replaced was one of those factory parts that was remade to fit a variety of vehicles. With this the ignition was not exact and had two notches that were important to the placement of the column which now gives play in the column thus leaving room for error? Could this be the horn problem?

It should have Turned off with the Insert of the Newly Programmed Key. If Not, It may need a Computer Reset. You Can try Pulling the ECM Fuse for 5 Min. to Reset the Computer. If this does not work, Try disconnecting the Battery and Reconnecting. Make sure that you have a RadioCode before Disconnecting the Battery Though. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

I had a similar problem intermittent NO START. No click, buzz or other noise. Everything worked but wouldn't start. Unfortunately it took two trips to the dealer to locate the problem. Next time it happens find the purple wire in the wire harness under the cover on top of the engine. A simple tester that connects to ground with an lighted "awl" type probe will tell you if there is power from the key to that point. If there is and you're not starting then the only other thing downline is the starter. Can't repair them only replace. Dealer will be about 900.00 P&L , If you're daring or have some help it's right on top DIY 400.00.

IF when you purchased your car you didn't set your own personal code you will have to take this to your local GM dealer and they can pull the code that is set at the factory and unlock your radio.THe proceedure for setting your own code then unlocking radio is in your owners manual. The dealership I worked for did this for free.

SOURCE: 2001 Cadillac Deville problems starting

I have had the same problem and I have come to the conclusion it is the security system. After 3 minutes the car will start so there is nothing wrong with the battery or starter. I have had it to the dealer a few times and they cannot solve it. It may be the locks on the doors and they may not be resetting properly. I have learned to live with it.

Do you have the correct keys now? The dealership can cut the correct keys off of the VIN number if you have proof of ownership. Without the proper transponder in the key the security system will not allow the car to start.

Car turns over for five seconds, then quits. Dealership replaced a relay two months ago. How to replace relay?

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

Your vehicle security system is having an issue. Check your Owner's Manual for advice, or tow the vehicle to your local dealership to have them reset the security system for you.

Could be a wiring problem or the clockspring in the steering column.
You would need to pull the steering wheel and test the circuits.

1998 cadillac horn goes off randomly

Sounds like a bad horn button which is actually part of the airbag. Replace your airbag. They're cheap on e-bay and it's not hard to do. Just make sure you disconnect the battery before doing any airbag work.

Car with lock light on dash

GM factory security sytem light, flashes when you lock or unlock the doors. If a key is inserted into the ignition, and that key is not programmed into the computer, the computer shuts the engine down and car will not crank, and if I remember correcty, when that happens you have to have the car towed into the GM dealership, and they have to hook your car up to GMs tech three diagnostic system.

Vehicle will not start even with a new battery, but the windows still roll up and down and the head lights still come on. Could it be a fuse?

The chances of your problem being CAUSED by a fuse are ZERO. Fuses do not cause electrical failures. Electrical failures cause blown fuses.
If the battery was dead and has now been replaced, the MOST LIKELY cause of your problem is that the antitheft system "thinks" that somebody has tried to steal your car and has disabled engine starting.

Try this: LOCK your vehicle using the remote lock on your key fob. Wait approximately 5 minutes for the security system to "time out" then UNLOCK the car, again using the remote. Then immediately get in and try to start the engine. If ths does not work, your security system or one of the other systems on your vehicle needs service. You will have to tow it in for diagnosis. (Computer REQUIRED!)
