You can try using synthetic gear lube, I have found it reduces shift effort by at least half when it is cold.

Your description is a bit ambiguous, though I have found a great, handy diagnostic article that addresses your issue, and includes to probable causes (a. deposit buildup and b. solenoid malfunction):

SOURCE: E46 M problem changing gears.

Its not advisable to just add fluid.. You must first determine if it is low..

Maybe concider getting the fluid exchanged if you have allot of miles on it..

It could also be that the syncronizer is beging to fail..

Hope this helps !!

WHERE IS THE GEARBOX OIL LOCATED IN OPEL CORSA 1.45 LITE 2004. WHERE DOES SOMEONE PUT IT IN.

That car has reported problems with the gearshift linkage, rather than the actual gearbox. There's certainly no harm in giving it an oil change though. The gearbox has a drain plug on the rear bottom edge, and a filler plug on the side of the casting about 1/2 way along and 1/2 way up. The correct level is the bottom of the filler hole when cold. It's a heck of a messy job though unless you have done it before.

I have a problem with my golf 4 gti 1.8t....when it's cold it doesn't change gears I always have to wait and warm it up.... Once it's hot it will change the gears normal.

Hello Bongs,

Not an uncommon complaint...varied VW models (and German cars in general) are known to be hard to shift when cold.

Less-than-stellar 1-2 syncros? Zero tolerance build specs?

Some people have reported double clutching helps..some have suggested moly additives..others have suggested changing the gear oil to synthetic. Give your local VW dealer a call and inquire about any additives they recommend for your hard shifting GTi.

Mazda bravo b2600 gearbox growles and grumbles. cant select 2nd or 4th gear. 1st, 3rd,5th & reverse ok.

I am sorry to tell that the gearbox need to have some major repair. It is also not advisable to continue driving as the gearbox can breakdown completely leaving you stranded. At least one the cluster drive gears in the gearbox is damaged (gear tooth stripped off) that will result in that only some of the gears being able to be selected. The broken off tooth are still in the gearbox and due to the oil movement in the gearbox it can be "washed up " in between to engaged gears destroying those as well. This will happen up to the point where there are no gear selection at all.

I have a 2007 Nissan 350Z that's hard to shift into 1st and 2nd gear when it's cold. Any suggestions

Oil thins as it gets warm, lowers the viscosity, gears then shift better. Check the gearbox oil, try a lower viscosity oil

Automatic Transmition Shifting Problem when Engine is cold

The auto was notorious for clutch pack failure. Tolerances were tight in the inner workings and this caused inadequate oil flow and poor cooling. Sooner or later the auto transmissions fail. You could have the transmission rebuilt but that will cost a bit to do it so it wont break again. I might recomend going back to honda atf and changing the fluid again. If that does not work try an additive oil for the transmission. I had some sucess with the recomend product.

last resort, have it swapped to a manual transmission. This is a cheap alternative as f series transmissions from the accord can bolt up to the h22 and can be found cheap at the expense of higher gear ratios.

Hard to change gears in my v6 hyundia

First thing to check is oil-level in the gearbox. If far below the filler hole - refill and look for oil leaks around seals and in clutch housing.

If oil level is ok - it might need changing or when serviced recently, it might have been filled with the wrong oil.

Somewhere on the side of the gearbox there's a bolt with a seal ring. Usually this is the filler hole. Oil level check is simple, stick a finger in downwards. Should feel the oil level.

Gear boxes need the right oil viscosity and are quite sensitive - meaning changing gears gets difficult specially when cold.

Hard to change gear

You are asking what can be done to shift your manual tansmission easier ?
I would say if you are "grinding" gears, The clutch will A) have to be repaired, or B) a syncro has gone out in the trany.

Prelude 2.2 vti W reg auto automatic tiptronic gearbox slipping

Hi there. Although the Dealer has changed the oil, did they do a 'Stall Test' whilst the gearbox was cold and again when at normal running temperture? If not, that's what they must do firstly. This will identify whether you have a slipping clutch/s. The Honda autobox also includes what is known as accumulators - these control how each clutch is engaged during acceleration. For example, if you are accelerating slighly/smoothly, you want each gear to be engaged gently and smoothly, whereas, when accelerating hard, you need the gear engaged quickly and hard to aviod clutch slippage. Thus, the fact that you are experiencing a hard engagement might mean that an accumulator/s is seized. If that's the case, it will mean that the autobox will need stripping, cleaning and be checked for worn components. Hope this helps, Scottech.
