Remove drive belt and spin pump by hand to check for noise. You might need to remove coolant of remove pump from motor to do a good check.

SOURCE: squeking noise coming from the

There are many possibilities for this noise. The pulley can be bad or the belt can be worn or its over tight or got bit loose or the belt and the pulley got dried up.----- First thing you can try is spray bit water around the belt and pulley area, with hairspray and let it remain for few minutes then start/ run the vehicle and see if the noise is there. If the noise is still there then, --
I would suspect one of the idler pulleys, alternator bearings, water pump baring, you can isolate the location of the sound by using a short piece of hose, hold one end at your ear and with the engine running and the squealing noise evident carefully aim the other end of the hose at the deferment pulley locations, as you get closer to the noise source you will hear a marketable rise in noise you hear through the hose, careful not to get the hose caught up in the belt.-------- Other thing you can try is drop down the belt, and check each pulley, especially the steering pump.
To see if it is the belt or the bearing or tensioner, use a squirt bottle to squirt water on the pulley surface you suspect. If it quiets it momentarily, it is the belt. If it makes no difference, it is the pulley or more likely the tensioner. Watch the tensioner, that is 4" inch diameter pulley that is up top that goes to nothing but an arm, and gun the engine with your hand on the accelerator cable. You should see the arm flex that the pulley is on if it is working, if not it will squeal. You can replace it from the bottom with a 15mm wrench.---------- If the squeaking pulley pr pother part not replaced, the problem with increase and belt will get cracked and it needs to be replaced.

Car started knocking really bad got a cylinder 2 misfire code after opening coolant bleed valve with enging hot

Okay, it may be due to overheating, that may be the noise you heard, lets hope. first allow engine to cool, open radiator cap or the resivoir cap, which ever is the fill, remove the bleeder at top hose and fill radiator slowly until coolant comes out bleeder.

note if water pump was replaced due to leaking and engine was overheated at that time then it may be a good idea to replace the thermostat .
after filling is done start engine and allow it to run. watch temperature if temp start to climb past half way shut engine down and let sit for 5min. then restart and check level, in res do not open cap . feel air from fan and see if it is getting hot, this may take up to a half hour but do not drive,

A few questions, does this jeep have an electric fan?
when you heard the knocking was engine temp hot?
If you start jeep cold does engine knock?
Did this jeep get a new thermostat with waterpump job?
did it overheat when pump went bad and why did water pump get replaced?

sorry for all the questions ,just trying to get all the info to help you .

How to find out if loud knocking is piston or thrown rod, plus battery will not stay charged. This all happened after backfire and blown muffler

The only way to determine what it is would be to remove the sump from the motor, Either way you need another motor as the cost to repair will be greater than the cost to replace.

I heard a knocking the other day and now it died! Here is what some people have said the noise was....fly wheel on transmission, rod knocking. I have checked all fluids and they are fine. Any ideas?

Fly wheel will not cause a knock. Knocking may be caused by insufficient oil supply within the engine. This may be caused by a failed oil pump, excessive sludge build-up, faulty rod or main bearings. Did you notice the oil light for flickering or being lit while driving?? Is the engine able to spin when you are starting it??

I have 1996 jeep cherokee sport 4x4. When I start the engine it makes a squeking noise and gets louder when i step on the gas. I think the belt is starting to slip. I have also noticed when its making this...

Your water pump is starting to seize up. Today's modern serpentine belts don't just slip. Your water pump is dragging. Which is causing the noise and the temperature increase. Get it fixed and you will notice better gas mileage. If you continue to run it like that be sure to keep your eye on the temperature gauge. One overheat or close call has the potential to do big damage to an engine of that age.

It could very well be a valve or lifter. The low oil may also cause the lifters or rods to knock.
As long as you aren't loosing oil or coolant, jeep runs good, and the knocking is not extreme, than add oil and you should be ok.
