yes 5 is the high setting, but that has been replaced along with the fan motor and the climate control knobs panel, what ever that is called. these did not solve the problem

  • katfoults Jan 12, 2009

the climate control knob seems to affect the automatic lights when you turn it down, it turns them off plus the fan still soes not work on anything but the highest setting.

Glad u solved the problem. I have the OPPOSITE problem. 5 setting doesn't work but 1-4 does. Mechanic said that section of the motor burnt out or that section of the switch, something like that.

01 grand.prix ac fan switch only works on high. has a duel temp controller when you turn fan off the only way fan comes back on is to move the temp controller levers

Hi!!
When the Blower Motor Resistor (controls blower speeds) goes bad, the blower motor works only on HIGH SPEED. REPLACE IT.
BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR Removal & Installation
  • Disconnect negative battery cable.
  • Remove right lower instrument panel insulator panel.
  • Disconnect blower resistor connector located behind right side of dash.
  • Remove blower resistor screws and blower resistor.
To install, reverse removal procedure
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!

Alrighty my fans arent working when my car grand prix gt is on... the fans only work when i turn the ac or defrost on... we just changed the censors, temp gage, thermostat, pump, fuses, .... and still not...

Turn the key on and unplug the coolant temp sensor to see if the fans will turn car does not need to be running. There should a few relays hi speed fan, lowspeed fan. It is also possible that the fan motors are bad as well. The different speeds are opertating at different voltages and when high speed kicks in enough voltage is supplied to power up the fan however the lowspeed may be requiring to much voltage to operate with in the fans parameter. Attached is your fan circuit wiring diagram a3de536.gifIf you remove the relays one at a time a run a jumper wire between terminals 87 and terminal 30 on the relay you should get the fans to come on. This should work with both relays but make sure to only try what at a time. The terminal numbers will be located on the relays. Pay close attention to the lowspeed relay because when you jump the high and it works but jumping the low does not it may be the actual fans.

1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT; Elec problem with fan

Replace the blower resistor that is mounted next to the blower motor on the passenger side of the vehicle.
This will restore correct blower operation and I suspect it is also back-feeding voltage resulting in your electrical issues.
Two screws hold the blower resistor into the heater case and it is very easy to replace.
Good luck

Climate control switch does not work in lower modes only in high.

The pontiacs have an issue with the ignition switch, I have a 2001 grand prix that did the same. The ac fan would only work on 5 and the headlights would go off if on 1-4 replace the switch and all is fine.
