How to remove axles from rear 8.8

Have puller atached but not shure if i need to disconnect c-clips rear before start slamming out

You must pull the diff cover off, then remove the center pin and spider gears, then remove the C clip that holds the axle in the carrier assembly.

If you have already removed the outer axle bearing cover in the rear hub, try popping the axle out as some of them have a compression clip holding it in place in the differential. If it doesn't pop loose, you wil have to remove the differential cover and push the axle inward enough to access the retaining clip to remove it. It should slide out fairly easile once the axle is pushed in far enough to clear the retainer clip lock collar.

This is a c clip axle remove diff cover rotate carrier to gain access to drive pin bolt on passenger side of carrier. remove bolt 5/16 head pin will slide out . NOW DO NOT ROTATE ANYTHING. on the side the axle seal is bad tire should be off brake drum off (disc remove caliper and mount) push in on axle c clip should fall out then slide axle out. remove seal with a seal puller and install new one.

How to replace rear axel wheel bearings on 97 ford explored


You will need an internal bearing puller. You will have to remove the rear axle by pulling off the differential cover. Then remove the bolt holding the spider gear cross shaft in place. Remove the shaft and spider gears. If your tire is already removed and brake drum is off, push in the axle and remove the circle clip. Once this is out you can slide your axle out you can remove the backing plate for your brakes and get to the bearing. Pull the seal out and pull out the bearing with a puller and slide hammer. Install the new bearing by hitting on the outside race ONLY. Install a new seal and install in reverse order.

How do i or what tools do i need to remove the rear wheel hub on a 2001 mercury grand marquis with abs. can't find the puller or proceure anywhere.


The rear wheels do not have a hub. They have an axle and and axle bearing.

The axle can be removed by removing the differential cover. there will be a bolt that holds the differential pin in place. Usually a 5/16 or 8mm wrench will work to remove it. Once the pin is out the axle can be pushed in from the outside of the vehicle and the c-clip can be removed. Do not rotate anything with the dif pin removed or the spider gears will fall out of place. Once the c-clip is removed the axle will pull out of the axle housing.

If you need to replace the bearing that the tool you need is called an an axle bearing remover. You will also need a slide hammer in order to use this tool. To install the new bearing you will need a tool called a bearing/race driver and a hammer.

this procedure is for replacing the axle bearing, it has all the info u need to do whatever it is u are doing with the axle removed.

Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Axle puller
  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Set of ¼-inch drive sockets
  • ¼-inch drive ratchet
  • Hammer
  • Lug wrench
  • Tube of RTV silicone
  • 2 bottles of rear axle oil
  • Bucket
  1. Step 1 Raise and support the rear of the vehicle. Remove the wheels. Remove the rear cover on the third member or axle. Place the bucket under the rear to catch the fluid. Remove the brake drums if the vehicle has drum brakes.
  2. Step 2 Rotate the outside axle until the center carrier is in a position where the small 8 mm or ¼-inch bolt is at 7 o'clock and clear of the housing so that it can be removed. This is the bolt holding the center through pin that runs through both spider gears. Position the carrier so that when the bolt is removed, the pin can be dropped straight down without contacting the housing.
  3. Step 3 Remove the center pin and lay it in the cover with its retaining bolt. Do not rotate the carrier with the pin out, since the pin is what holds the spider gears in place. If the carrier is turned, the spider gears would need to be adjusted so that they line up again with the hole for the through pin.
  4. Step 4 Push both axles in toward the carrier. This is now possible because the through-pin has been removed. This will expose the C-clips that hold the axles from coming out of the carrier. Remove the C-clips with the needle nose pliers and lay them in the pan. Pull the axles out of the housing and stand them up.
  5. Step 5 Remove the outside axle bearings and seals with the axle puller. The axle puller has several ends of different sizes; pick the one that fits through the center of the bearing. The axle puller is a sliding hammer with a T-end that can swivel. When the puller end is inserted through the bearing, rotate it slightly to get the T-end to swivel up and grab the bearing. Using the slide hammer, hammer the bearing and seal out of the housing.
  6. Step 6 Clean the housing surface where the bearing will be seated. Place the new bearing into the housing as far as it will go, and make sure it goes in straight. Place the old bearing on top of the new bearing and hit it with the hammer to drive the new bearing in. Tap it on in a circular pattern and continue until there is a resounding difference in sound as the bearing contacts the lip in the axle (it will sound more solid). Remove the old bearing.
  7. Step 7 Install the seal by tapping it carefully on four corners, avoiding the rubber part of the seal, until it is seated. Do not bend the housing or it will leak.
  8. Step 8 Install the axles and push them in all the way. Insert the C-clips on the ends of the axles and pull the axles back out to seat the C-clips in the carrier. Insert the pin back into the carrier through the spider gears and install the small retaining bolt to keep the pin in.
  9. Step 9 Clean the face of the housing and the axle cover where the gasket material will seal. Use brake cleaner or alcohol to remove all the oil from the surface to be sealed. Smear some RTV silicone sealant on the axle cover around the edge in a continuous line about a quarter of an inch thick. Allow the cover to sit until the RTV silicone sealant cures to the point that it will not transfer to the fingers when touched. The proper terminology is when it "skins," or is still wet inside but starting to dry on the outside; this way it will stay in place.

How do i pull rear wheel bearings


Replacing outer wheel bearings on a solid axle rear end is a moderately involved operation.

The rear axle cover has to come off so that you can remove the C clips to allow the actual axle to come out. Once out, a bearing puller is needed to remove the old bearing, and a bearing installed may be needed to drive in the new one.

If this sounds out of your comfort zone, a shop should charge $200-$300 to make the repair.

The rear axle bearing? I'm going to presume that's the bearing you're talking about and not the rear main bearing, so please take that into consideration if you would

You're going to have to jack up the rear of the van, remove the tire and drum. Then you have to place a drain pan under the rear differential and remove the cover. After the cover is removed spin the rear axle (the one with the tire off) to locate the pin in the very center of the differential. On the right side you will see an 8mm (5/16) bolt head.

When you remove the locking bolt (the 8mm) and slide the pin out DO NOT SPIN THE AXLE WITHOUT THE CENTER PIN IN PLACE. Push in on the axle with the bearing to be replaced and a "C" clip will fall out of the differential. SLIDE THE CENTER PIN BACK IN and screw in the locking bolt a few turns. Once the "C" clip slips out, you can pull the axle out. If you don't have a bearing puller, it's best to rent one. Insert the bearing puller and pop the bearing out.

You'll need to remove the rear end cover, remove the pin in the center pumpkin, push axle toward the center of vehicle and remove the axle clip, pull out axle. You may need a bearing puller to remove bearing.

REMOVE DIFF COVER ON 3rd MEMBER THERE WILL BE A SMALL 8mm BOLT REMOVE BOLT SLID PIN OUT PUSH AXLE IN AND REMOVE HORSE CLIP DO SAME FOR OTHER SIDE PUSH AXLE IN REMOVE CLIP. YOU'LL NEED A BEARING PULLER TO REMOVE BEARING INSTALL NEW BEARINGS WITH NEW SEAL, INSTALL BOTH AXLE WITH HORSE CLIPS INSTALL PIN AND 8mm BOLT, COVER AND REFILL.

Do you have bolt in axels? or are they held in with C- clips? If its bolt in axels you need to remove the bolts, and you may need an axel puller to get them out. If its got C- clips rear cover on rearend has to come off, and pin has to be removed to get C- clip out to get axel out.
