My 4.7 liter V 8 Toyota lifters are knocking after warming up. the harder it gets the worse it gets

ADJUSTMENT Although it is sometimes possible to reuse an old cylinder head cover gasket, in most cases it makes more sense to purchase a new one before beginning the procedure. Some vehicles may require the use of silicone sealant either with or without a new cover gasket. For more details, please refer to the cylinder head cover procedures in Engine & Engine Overhaul of this repair guide and refer to the gasket manufacturer's instructions.

Z24i Engine
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
For the intake valves: 1-4-5-8 valve clearance is 0.012 in. (0.30mm). For the exhaust valves: 2-3-6-7 valve clearance is 0.012 in. (0.30mm). The pivot locknut torque specification is 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).

  1. The valves must be adjusted with the engine warm, so start the truck and run the engine until the needle on the temperature gauge reaches the middle setting. After the engine is warm, shut it off.
  2. Note the location of any wires and hoses which may interfere with cylinder head cover removal, disconnect them and move them to one side. Remove the bolts holding the cylinder head cover in place and remove the cover. Remember, the engine will be hot, so be careful!

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks indicate that the No. 1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. If you're not sure of which stroke you're on, remove the No. 1 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Pressure will be felt as the piston starts up on the compression stroke.
  2. Refer to the accompanying illustration (upper part), then check valves (1), (2), (4) and (6) using a flat bladed feeler gauge. The feeler gauge should pass between the valve stem end and the rocker arm screw with a very slight drag. Insert the feeler gauge straight, not at an angle.
  3. If the clearance is not within the specified value, loosen the rocker arm lock nut and turn the rocker arm screw to obtain the proper clearance. After correct clearance is obtained, tighten the locknut.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks indicate that the No. 4 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. If you're not sure of which stroke you're on, remove the No. 4 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Pressure will be felt as the piston starts up on the compression stroke.
  5. See the illustration (lower part), then check valves (3), (5), (7) and (8). Check and adjust valve clearance as necessary.
  6. Install the cylinder head cover gasket, the cover itself and any wires or hoses which were removed. Check the engine oil level.

KA24E, VG30i and VG30E Engines

These models utilize hydraulic valve lifters. Periodic adjustment is neither necessary or possible. There is however a bleed down procedure that is necessary when the valve train has been disassembled.
HYDRAULIC LIFTER BLEED DOWN
  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. Check the lifters for proper operation by pushing hard on each lifter with fingertip pressure.
  3. If the valve lifter moves more than 0.04 in. (1mm), air may be inside it. Make sure the rocker arm is not on the cam lobe when making this check.
  4. Install the cylinder head cover.
  5. If there was air in the lifters, bleed the air by running the engine at 1000 rpm for 10 minutes.

I have a 97 chevy 5.7 vortec it knocks when cold but goes away when it warms up my truck is running lean which is causing a few other problems and ive done some research and im getting it could be bearings...


all of the problems you mentioned will be there when warm. bearing noise gets worse as the oil thins out and the oil pressure will be lower than normal. Collapsed lifter will indicate with a problem misfiring and will be there all the time. Piston slap will be more evident at lower than required idle rpms. Some knocks can be from loose valve seat inserts but then again that will show up as an occasional misfire and will progressively get worse. Check that the oil filter you are using has a non-return valve built into it to retain oil in the top end when stationary. The knock may be until oil pressure is built up. El cheapo filters mostly do not have the valve. check the viscosity of the oil you are using as you may have to go up a grade.
use a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Some failing bearings (idler,water pump,alternator etc) will knock for a while until they warm up

My 1994 nissan sentra has a bad knocking in it. can it be a stuck lifter?


Knocking is most certainly not plugs and wires. A lifter could be it or you could have a broken piston rod/end. Not good and should be looked at by a mechanic.

Cold knock then subsides


it is possibly piston slap,which is normal,some car company like GM also use slightly bigger gap between piston and cylinder on (3.1,3.4,3.8 liter engines) to help engine last longer,in return you get some piston slap when ENG cold,if it goes away after it warms up don't worry,it is normal

Motor knock sounds like rocker arms or lifters?


If your engine is knocking the sound with be at the bottom of your oil pan but if you have lifter or rocker arm problems the sound will be at the top of your engine. One other thing you said your car has 315k it might be time to change your oil pump.

I have a 2003 gmc Sierra half ton 4.8 liter that has a knock that sounds like lifters


There is,If you do the lifter you could be after something else,The noise sounds like a collapsed lifter,A collapse lifter can cause a misfire,The 2003 GMC sierra or I should say the 4.8 engines suffer from a cut O-ring between the oil pump screen and the oil pump causing oil areation,resulting in lifter noise,The noise will be present a cold start and then diminish at warm up.12_3_2012_8_08_44_am.gif

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra, when I start it in the morning it makes a knocking noise but once it warms up it goes away, what could be causing this?


We really need to know more about what kind of knocking you are hearing.

Pinging, clink clink, sounds like the time you got bad gas and put a strain on the engine causing it to knock. Airflow sensor telling the injectors how rich or lean to mix the fuel. Computer sets fuel air mix. timing , ect to match operating temp and if it is going bad throws the whole thing out of balance.

Ticking... click click click sound from the top of the engine that gradually fades,,( lifters on cam and valve chatter) sticking lifters can be treated with oil additive to clean them out if they aren't stopped up to bad. If that doesn't work or the noise keeps getting louder you need to have someone look at it or you can damage your cam or bend a valve and that can lead to a cascade failure of cam. lifters, valves and possible broken pistons.

Knocking. KNOCK KNOCK knock knock,from the bottom of the engine that fades ( rod bearing worn and slapping the crank til it gets enough oil to float it on the crankshaft or crank bearings worn and bearings trying to spin in the races)
If it is a hard knock could be a worn rod bearing or a partially stopped up oil port in the crankshaft that doesn't let the oil do its thing until it is warmed up. This problem can be slowed down with cleaning additives but the damage has already been done and will do nothing but get worse over time. If it is a bottom end bearing don't let it totally fail. If you have a mechanic you trust get him to listen to it and help you figure out what needs to be done. Once you have heard these noises and have someone point out the differences you don't forget them.
Remember. Sooner you get this figured out the less damage done and the cheaper the repair bill will be.

MY 2000 Montero Sport has a loud knocking when i Start it UP ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS COLD IT GOES AWAY AFTER IT WARMS UP


Sounds like a hydralic lifter issue. These lifters operate the cylinder valves and run off oil pressure. When the engine is cold and the oil is thick worn lifters tend to rattle. When the engine warms up, everything expands and the lifters stop rattling. There is no easy cure for this except replacing the lifters. Sorry....

I have a major tapping noise from a 3lt diesel turbo toyota surf .constant loud tapping ,quietens with oil pick up a little. not a knocking just a tapping


lifters noisy,lots of miles on engine?as oil pressure gets higher and engine warms up(everything expands a little and quietens a little)it gets better,try fresh oil thats thicker for worn engines,and or check tappets(valve adjustment)if its applicable to this engine

1986 chevette has alot of knocking coming from the engine.Lifters have been adjusted,but problem still persists, what else could it be?


Lifters tick. Rod bearings knock(typically the harder you mash the gas, the louder the knock). poor quality gas can do it if you need a tune-up.

Knocking until car warms up


Sounds like a lifter noise. worn lifters can't keep oil in them anymore so over night the oil leaks out. when you start the vehicle, you will hear a ticking noise or knocking noise till the lifters fill with oil again. only remedy is to replace the lifters.
you could try an additive but it's temporary.
