Question about 1999 Land Rover Discovery

2 Answers

Electrical Drain After having my '99 Series one in the shop FOUR times in the past four weeks, and having had three alternators and two new batteries installed in that timeframe, I need some help!!! Basically, I drive it and the power goes down if I have any accessories on. ALWAYS happens when the headlights are on. First the "Anti-lock" light comes on, then the red "SRS" light, and then occasionally even the battery light. So there is some sort of power drain going on, and though I have a two week old alternator, and a 5 day old battery, the truck won't even turn over now. I had a new driver's side headlight installed a number of months back, if that is of any help.

Battery may have broken plates in cells or cracked plates. May show battery is good , but i would replace it.
Also, starter solenoid may be bad, replace starter as needed.

sounds like you will have to replace the ignition switch, if the key will still turn all the way then it is not too hard if you are patient about doing it, haynes puts out a good repair book on the Mitsubishi's for the do-it-yourselfer, they run about 25 usd at autozone.

Battery light went on and the vehicle died under way 20 minutes later.

If the Power steering and everything else seems to work the problem should be in the Alternator or Battery. Check your Battery cables for loose or dirty connections.

If you find the Battery cables were the problem, you need to recharge the Battery. A jumpstart may get you going, but the Alternator is meant to keep up with the current electrical demands and it will take a long time to fully recharge the Battery.

Autozone and Oreillys can check the Alternator and Battery if they are carried in, or on the car. Since the Expedition is dead, you can take in the Battery for a recharge and testing. This will keep you from needless work removing the Alternator if only the Battery was bad. If the Battery tests good after the recharge, then your only remaining option is to remove the Alternator for testing. Should both the Battery and the Alternator test out good, you have a major electrical malfunction. You will need an electrical shop.

Check the wiring on the alternator to make sure it's on securely. also check all sensor connections in the area where the shop was working...Better yet, have the shop check this stuff...They did the job...You should not have to be correcting it!

Last 14 months - 4 new batteries & new alternator fitted. Car still not starting and had to be returned to garage! Any ideas!

You need to have your electrical system checked for excessive draw. If the shop that worked on it has not done so, bring it to another shop...This is a routine procedure which definitely should have been done at least after the second battery! I can't offer a solution or "quick fix" because without doing that procedure I'd only be guessing!!!

Serious Electrical Issues

your clicking noise is from a bad turn signal switch get that replaced and it will fix the problem. as for the battery drain issue you need to take it to a dealer or a very good mechanic that has dealt with VW before and have them do a parasitic draw test. that means their is a source that is pulling amperage from your battery even though the key is off.
