The pump runs for 2 seconds when you turn the key on, then it shuts off. During cranking, it runs all the time.

here's 94 mustang circuit

Overview The fuel system for supplies the fuel injectors with clean fuel at a controlled pressure. The system is called Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI). The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the fuel pump and monitors the fuel pump electrical circuit. The PCM also controls the duration of the on/off cycle providing correct timing for the injectors. If the injectors have been replaced, it is necessary to clear learned values contained in Keep Alive Memory (KAM) in the PCM. This can be done by disconnecting the battery or the PCM for five minutes. (Refer to Section 2,
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Reset , for more information.)
Fuel System The fuel system consists of a fuel tank with reservoir, fuel pump assembly, fuel supply and return lines, fuel filter(s), pressure test point, fuel rail, fuel injector, and fuel pressure regulator, Figure 1.
When the ignition switch is in the on position, the EEC Power Relay is on. The EEC Power Relay, located in the CCRM, provides power to the PCM and the fuel pump relay coil, which is also inside the CCRM. Power for the fuel pump is supplied through a fuse link or high current fuse attached to the starter relay (battery side). Current flows through the Fuel Pump Relay and Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch to the Fuel Pump. The IFS is a safety device designed to shut off the Fuel Pump in the event of a collision (Figure 2). If the IFS is tripped , it must be reset. Refer to the Owner Guide for instructions.
When the ignition switch is turned on, the Fuel Pump will operate. If the PCM does not receive PIP signals indicating that the engine is turning over, the Fuel Pump is shut off after one second. After the engine starts, the PCM will continue to operate the fuel pump unless PIP signals are not received, indicating the engine has stopped, or the IFS is tripped .

1989 mustang won't start

There are several answers depending on whether the engine cranks or not. If it does not crank, check the brake pedal safety switch on the pedal lever. There is an inertia switch which may be in the trunk on your model and this will cut off the power to the fuel pump. Newer year models have the inertia switch by the front kickpanel. In either case a push button on it will restore power.

That being said, if you use a little starting fluid and the engine tries to run, you know it has a fuel shortage problem.

I have a 1999 gmc jimmy that will start and run fine for a few days then will turn over but not start for days

I wild have to work on this until I duplicated it, then check the vehicle while it was messing up. You could have one defective component even if you just replaced it. (Fuel pump, ignition module, crank sensor, etc.) You could have simply a bad coolant temp sensor, or maybe your mass air flow sensor causing problems. You could try unhooking your coolant temperature sensor and seeing if it wild start. This makes the pcm look at a default value. You can try the same thing with the mass air flow.Do you have access to a scanner when it is messing up? Have you checked for spark at the plugs? Have you checked your fuel pressure? Sorry, I would have to actually work on it.

Car will always turn over, but will not start on certain days. At first i thought it could be due to dampness and faulty wireing. When it does start it runs smooth. The other day it started in the rain....

next ime you dont start there should be a fuel tester shrader valve just like the tire shrader valve crank it and if it doesnt start check the fuel shrader valve see how much fuel comes out and if it dribbles you need a fuel pump and filter. also the 1989 are populat for intermittent due to the ICM recieving low signals, and the theory back then was what went out first spark or fuel. ICM and cam sensor and crank sensor was just replaced, Now that was the fuel injected part, 1989 there was still carburator that was being made at that time and the popular breakdown was fuel filter getting plugged.

#1 NEED TO VERIFY SPARK AT SPARK PLUGS # 2 CK FUEL PRESSURE AT SCHRADER VALVE ON FUEL RAIL ,,PRESSURE DEPENDS ON TYPE ENGINE ....IF NO SPARK AT SPARK PLUGS CHECK SPARK FROM COIL WIRE , IF NO SPARK AT COIL ,CHECK VOLTAGE TO IGNITION COIL SHOULD BE 12 VOLTS, IF NO VOLTAGE AT COIL ( KEY ON ) CHECK FUSES THEN IGHITION SWITCH. IF NO FUEL PRESSURE AND FUEL PUMP RUNS REPLACE PUMP .. CK VOLTAGE TO FUEL PUMP WHILE CRANKING . CK USING PUMP GROUND WIRE AT THE PUMP CONNECTOR THIS WILL PROVE GROUND ALSO. USE TEST LIGHT TO VERIFY
