It's the shift interrupt switch. The switch is probably fine, the mechanism isn't working properly. Probably one of the worst designs ever. This switch momentarily stalls the engine to allow the shift to happen. The problem is the "momentarily" part. There is now an electronic upgrade that is supposed to fix it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is an electrical connection located on the transmission. Disconnect the connector and try to drive it again. This will help to determine if the problem is located in the transmission or engine related.
Let me know.

SOURCE: 1999 olds alero stalls when put in gear

Runs fine when not put in gear? Sounds like transmission is stuck in "lock-up". Need to go to transmission or full automotive shop for repair. This is not something you want to attempt on your own unless you are experienced with removing valve bodies and solenoids from the inside of transmissions.

SOURCE: car stalls once put in gear

Most common causes for this is the MAP sensor and/or the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). The MAP handles the air flow and the TPS controls the throttle speed under cold and hot conditions. Your car is either not idling fast enough or there's an issue with the air flow causing it to stall when RPMS's are low.

SOURCE: 1990 Pontiac 6000 2.5 after driving, car stalls when put in gear.

You need to replace the TCC solenoid under the side cover pan of the transmission. You can also unplug the wires that go to the transmission in the front. After that it will not go into overdrive but it will stay running at stop lights untill you have it repaired.

throttle position sensor can cause the high idle as will a hole in the egr valve tube as far as stalling as soon as u put in to gear could be torque converter not unlocking but id check the egr tube first

My Nissan starts and runs when I put the car into drive it stalls....as soon as I put it in reverse it stalls

Generally there is something wrong that makes the engine too weak for that resistance of putting it in gear.
That could be a misfiring cylinder, an intake manifold leak or cracked hose, a bad sensor like temperature, etc.
Does it idle smoothly?
It is better after it warms up?

But another possibility is that the tranmission is not going into the right gear. Try putting it into low instead of drive.
Of the torque converter bearing could be siezed, and not allowing the normal slippage it needs.

I just replaced the battery and alternater in my 2005 camery it ran fine for about 20 miles then it stalled out . it will start as long as it is in park but as soon as i put it in to drive or any other...

If the car runs at idle fine, and you put the car in gear the only thing that happens is that the engine flexes when that happens the throttle tube that is connected to the air box stretches if you loose the clamps of this tube and the air gets in. that air is not metering by the air flow meter then the engine dies I have seen that a lot.So check those two clamps.

Need help on a 1995 Chevy Suburban. It will die at idle when it's up to running temp and in gear. I have to pump the gas peddle to keep it from dying. Just did a tune up and throttle body cleaning to see...

it sounds like the motor's tick over is far to slow when the car is put in gear if the tick over is say 750 rpm out of gear then it stalls when you put it in gear lift the tick over up to say 850 rpm the best way to set this up is have a friend sit in the car, warm the motor up, then get your friend to hold the foot brake hard on and put the car in gear, if it stalls bring the tick over up (in gear) till it dont stall,,,but hold the brakes hard on when your doing this,,,getting run over is not a nice thing to hapen to you and it wont make your day? you should feel a dit of a thump when you plop it into gear so hold the foot brake down when you do plop it in gear every time you do so, it saves the transmishion getting a thumping, all the things you have done to your car so far have only done it good, but why not change the oil and filter as well and know you have done the full monty on your car, and it wont need another service for another year or so?????
