SOURCE: When should timing belt be changed?

Hi there:
most manufactures call for timing belt/chains to be replaced approximately every 75,000 to 100,000 miles.
Timing belt replacement can be very difficult if you don't have much experience in that type of repair for the best step by step instructions it would be best too go and get a repair manual from your local parts distributor i would recommend getting a chilton repair manual.
hope this is helpful for you best of luck too you

Can a timing chain be tightened on a 2003 sunfire? It's blowing black smoke, raps loudly when I start it then quiets down (but still raps) during idle. It also gets very loud during acceleration and...

Hi,

Timing chains cannot be tightened as such.

However, if you are experiencing chain "chatter", it is possible to reduce this noise by either:

- changing to correct viscosity engine oil
- replacing the chain "tensioner"
- Last resort: removing plastic chain guide inside timing cover (Note: only do this if it does not adversely affect the chain operation.

cheers,

Step by step how remove and replace timing chain

This type of work is beyond the scope of what we can advise here. I'd suggest that you obtain a CHilton or some other manual for your car, with pictures and instructions, to do this job.

If you can't find a manual in the local auto parts store, try the local library. They often will have a book, or a used book store like half priced books.

(I usually donate my old manuals to the library after I dump a car, figuring if I ever need to work on that type car again, I know where it will be at.)
