IAC(idle air controll valve)TCV(throttle control valve)get some carb cleaner and spray into the throttle body. You have to remove the hose from the air cleaner. These valves tend to get gunked up.It is best if you can remove them to clean them better.

98 explorer 4.0 SOHC wont idle and stalls when weather is below 40 degrees. worse when colder. Just had tune up, new airfilter new fuel filter but problem did not get better.

you have a bad idle air control valve. its job is to have motor rpm high until the motor warms up then turn it back to normal.

Dodge dakota stalls

I have had the same problem and have a Dodge Dakota as well, the fix is very simple. Here is the cause, the automatic idle speed control valve gets sticky from fuel vapor backwash from the intake, this inhibits its ability to react quickly to changes in load on the engine (cold weather makes it worse) such as putting the truck in gear or turning on the AC. To clean the intake throttle valve and the idle speed control valve (called the IAC) do the following procedure, make sure you follow the steps exactly to get the problem fixed, then do it once a year from then on.
To correct this problem get a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes, restart the engine and blow the gunk out by revving up the engine several times. The intake is now clean.

98 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4. Trans/Idle problems.

It won't shift 1-2 or 2-3 or both unless you let off? If it is just 1-2 it might be a band adjustment, but I'll bet you have a plugged governor solenoid screen also.

Motor stalls when put into gear, also acts like its out of fuel, or no fire to the coil. sometimes it wont even start, but if it does.. as soon as you put into gear it falls on its face.

This is usually the I.A.C. valve (Idle Air Control Valve), which is located on the throttle body on the intake. It controls the amount of air being pulled into the throttle body and when it has the wrong air/fuel mixture, it can cause it to run rough or even die when any kind of load gets put on the engine. It will also do this when turning on the A/C and etc. It may be called something else on a Dakota, but they both serve the same purpose. Hope this helps some. Good luck!
