Question about 1985 Ford F 250

1985 diesel after sitting overnight will not start

1985 ford diesel runs fine if you pour fuel in the intake throat. Runs fine if you start it every couple hours. After sitting overnight will not start can bleed it full fuel stream. Pour fuel down intake throat start right up and run fine. Have replaced filter, fuel pump thought thier might have been a check valve issue.

    where is the fuel shutoff relay, could that be bad? seems like it is not getting fuel when it has sat for several hours. if you pour raw fuel down the throat it starts and runs then it is fine for all day as long as you start it every 1-2 hous, have replaced fuel tanks fuel pump all the lines to the pump. If you take the filter off it is full fuel? Any help would be appreciated...... Had sat in a pole barn for 12 years never started. after replacing all the tanks and lines and pump started just fine then one day would not start after sitting unless you poured fuel in the engine.

    I have taken apart the fitting by the filter, It splits and goes to the fuel in on the injection pump and there is a connection for the fuel return. Does not appear to be any check valve I can find unles its located somewhere else. I replaced all the fuel return lines this weekend and did not seem to make it any better and could have made it worse. I used a factory kit with o-rings and hose and clamps etc. Starting to think just add a electric and see if that solves my problem. Any help appreciated

    Still sounds like a check valve issue. Leaking back somehow.

If it's a 7.3 they are notorious for sucking air at the fuel filter housing drain ****. There are I believe two small o-rings that seal the valve at the filter housing and those seals over time will deteriorate and cause air to be entrapped in the fuel system. The usual symptom of being able to start the engine every hour or so but when left over night ,,,,no start is classic. Hope this helps.

The check valve is a small brass fitting where the return line attaches to the filter head. I believe it takes a 7/16" wrench. There is a 'duck bill' inside that prevents fuel from leaking back to the tank causing air in the system. It should allow flow in only on direction. Some times you can see light through it if it's bad enough. Also, the lines between the injectors can dry out and start to leak air. Air will leak in before fuel leaks out, and you won't see it. There are plastic, cup-shaped connectors for these hoses that press onto the top of each injector. They are sealed by two o-rings on each injector body where it meets the connector. These o-rings can dry out and also leak air and fuel. Your Ford dealer or diesel service professional should have the proper o-rings. Any other o-rings might not seal, as they won't be the exact size. You already changed the fuel solenoid when you replaced the pump. It is inside. There has to be battery cranking voltage to it while cranking, and battery voltage with key in 'on' position. The wire attaches to the top of the pump. This is not likely to be the problem, since it restarts every 2 hours.

possible problem in the "new" carby with the accelerator pump not working
look down the throat of the carby and work the accelerator (engine stopped)

1992 Chevy Astro won't run, will start up great with starting fluid, or let it sit overnight.


You need to check the fuel pump pressure and I would change the fuel filter in the process. Sounds like you may have a bad fuel pump.

the fuel tank may need cleaning, sediment appears to be blocking the pick up tube when tank is at quarter, or the pick up tube may be broken at that height and the system cavitates at 1/4 tank

I got a1985 ford f250 with a 460 it will run for 30 secs and die I change everything to do with the ignition system and fuel system and still wont stay runnin


put so sea foam in carb let it sit over night start next morning should run fine it cleans out the carb get sea form at auto store runs about 10.99 a bottle just fill carb let sit

I have a 1985 6.2 diesel if u let it sit over night it real hard to start u got pour fuel down the intake to get it started glow plugs seem fine


check fuel line for minor leaks and check valve also check the filters sounds like air bound problems

If a diesel truck sits to long could it damage the fuel pump


Well,
It depends upon the enviroment the truck is stationed in. If you did not drain the truck before parking it for a long time. It tends to block intake valves etc.

Most common cause is a air leak into the fuel system at the filter bleed valve.

it sounds like your fuel lines aren't maintaining pressure and the angle is allowing too much fuel to drain out of the lines. i have the same issue with and older f350 diesel if i let it sit a while and it doesn't get started.
