Question about Cars & Trucks

2002 VW Passat 2.8 starts rough and stalls when started

When I start the car, you have to hit the gas to keep it running because it runs rough. When you hit the gas it sounds like misfires under the hood. I know I have a leaking valve cover gasket, but what is causing my car to misfire? My boyfriend thinks its the converter, but could it be the O2 sensors? Help!

Car was working fine just yesterday morning, so I don't see how the fuel pump would cause problems. Wouldn't it show some sign that it was going out?

Not always. Some time the first time you know something is wrong is when the engine stops

Hmmm.. Lets hope that is not the problem. A mechanic friend said to replace the coolant sensor, because I allowed it to get to low and sometimes that will make that sensor go bad and cease the car from starting.

No that will not affect the starting or running unless other sensors come into play and check engine light comes on. oxygen sensors dont play up as much as some would like to think!

It is not the oxygen sensor, it is the coolant sensor. Even the manual says that if the coolant gets to low this sensor will tell your car not to start so that you do not ruin the engine. My engine light has been on for some time, just have not had the money to get it fixed.

SOURCE: can a bad intake gasket cause my car not to run or run rough

Yes. If it is leaking, the engine is not getting enough air intake. It's the same as disconnecting the PCV valve.

I have a 2006 VW Passat 2.0T. My check Engine light is on and when it was scanned I got two codes 171 & 455. What does this mean? I do notice that when I fill up at the gas station, my car acts like it...

Engine is running lean and there is a leak in the evap system, most likely due to purge valve stuck open. This is causing the engine to flood after a fill up. This is a known problem with the 06 Passat. See post here: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2006-to-2010-volkswagen-passat-2.htm

Starts and stalls immediatly takes several starts and depressing gas peddle to keep running

This is a somewhat common problem, usually occurs also with ""steering lock fault". It appears to be a software/hardware issue. See VW dealer.
Can be worked around by: inserting key to first stop>wait for yellow steering wheel light to go out>insert key to second stop>wait for red steering wheel light to go out>start er up. This somehow works around the software issue.

it can be any of several things but the best bets are on the throttleposition sensor or the oxygen sensors, take the car to a shop and have a obd 2 code reader used to read the engines computer.

If it back fired it is possible the timing jump a tooth. If so, you'll have to have the timing sprockets placed back into the proper spots. Have your mechanic do this if it's needed. But in any case have the timing check first.
