I may be able to tell you alittle more if you can tell me what led you to the point of changing your thermostat.

Will a pt cruiser run perfectly fine with a blown head gasket.lots of white smoke, but runs fine

If i remember right the color of the smoke will tell you what it is and i think blue smoke is water getting into the combustion chamber. The car can run like this for a while. Lots of times the car will run like normal besides the smoke. But the passage in the gasket will continue to get bigger and lead to more serious problems.

I just changed the thermostat in my chevy g20 van. I had to unplug a plastic line just above the thermostat to get the thermostat housing loose. I reconnected the plastic line after installing the...

Did you unplug the coolant sensor near the thermostat when you changed the thermostat?
Check it for a bent/broken pin or a bad connection.Black smoke and a check engine light can be a sign of a possible coolant temp sensor problem.
You should run the codes to check what the van is actually asking for and don't forget to recheck the coolant level after you have driven it a bit,WHEN IT IS COLD!A great van to own!

Thermostat needle climbs pretty quickly and then the alarm signals to shut engine off, but there is no smoke, no check engine light

Have you recently changed the thermostat,if so there is air in the cooling system and needs to be bled out, water will not be in contact with the temp gauge, the reading it is getting is from steam.if not,it may be time to change the thermostat.
