If you can hear a click (quite loud) from the engine compartment, but the starter won't crank, this also could be caused by discharged battery-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SOURCE: wont start

is the earth cable giving a good engine and body contact.does your starter have two terminals and if so are they the right way around?is the battery any good?Is the engine able to be turned over by hand Make sure you have agood 12v supply to the starter solenoid when cranking the engine An engine test probe/light would be of a lot of use for you to do that test

SOURCE: My 1998 F150 5.4l engine is making a clicking sound

I believe there is a NTHSA bulletin on this problem. You can go to the NTHSA website and look it up. Usually this type of noise is the injector or valve train.

If it's making clicking noise then that sounds and means that it's the starter... Nothing else makes it click when turning the key, then the starter... If it was the Alternator it wouldn't hold the charge... You could try with jumper cables to turn it on then removing the negative terminal from the battery... If it turns off then it's the Alternator... Those are two possible solutions... Keep with the updates.

sounds like the timing belt has gone would not keep trying to start engine if this is the case and it will cost you more to fix. it may have striped a cog on the belt or the adjuster has given up the goat. clicking and clunk is a most common sound of the belt going. if you have to have the belt changed and the engine runs and is ticking then the valves are bent and you will need to have the head changed or the valves replaced, as over time the valve can snap and then the engine is a gonner.

Normally Shifting out of gear in motion wont damage much unless you revved the engine really high for an extended period. Shifting into park while in motion will make a ratcheting sound, but usually wont hurt anything. However the act of doing so may have tripped a fault in the ECU that makes the car think it needs to be in limp mode. It did just that and got you home albeit running roughly.

Have someone remove the NEGATIVE battery cable. leave it disconnected for a few minutes, then reconnect and jump start the car if the battery is too low. doing so should reset the ECU and restore normal operation. If drivable, proceed to a brand name parts store. they usually will reset your ECU codes for free. IF all is well this should fix the probelm. If something was indeed damaged, you wont likely be able to drive the car.

Car wont start...clicking noise

well running the voltage from alternator should be at least 14 volts or a bit higher, engine off it should read at least 13 volts at battery. if alternater is less then 14 volts, it is the alternator at fault. or a loose alt, belt.

sounds as if you may be looking in the wrong spot. If different gearing is drastically changing the symptoms you may want to check the trans. or torque converter. sudden pop with engine rpm increase and lack of power sounds like possible band breakage in transmission or impellor breakage in torque converter.
