my s reg renault megane coupe does the same thing. its fine when driving along but the minute you slow down at a junction/roundabout/in traffic stalls and does restart almost straight away.even when just starting the engine i need to be immediately revving or it will just die straight away while idle. Ive taken it to a renault garage who after having it for a week due to various mishaps and a day of diagnostics (at 75 quid)! .. decided it was the core temperature sensor... it wasnt. they then wanted to test the timing for a further £250. I had an independant mechanic have a look and he says that everything that usually causes this problem are fine. It seems to be misfiring and so he thinks it may be either the injection system or a coil which has broken down...i now need to take it to another garage for further diagnostics.

I would say idle air control valve sticking. its common on Renaults. This valve controls the air passing through the throttle body when you open and shut throttle. eg, foot down throttle open, the idle valve will be shut. back off throttle, then the air is shut off through main throttle body, so the valve opens to allow just enough air in for tickover. if valve sticking or moving to slowly it will not open in time to catch the idle when throttle shut, hence it cuts out.

I am driving a 1997 Toyota Prado 3.4 L petrol Automatic. Engine cuts out.

im assuming there are no lights on the dash.
If you remove both battery terminal wire and touch them together (Wires only)
that will reset any fault stored and reset the computer.
hopefully that will correct the fault.

It could be the filter is not leaking gas, but still is leaking enough so that air is being sucked in. Test all fittings.

My car keeps cuting out

its definitly not the lamber sensor or catalyst that wouldnt cause it to cut out just cause white/black smoke comming out the back. It could be a loose wire under the bonnet which might have been triggered by you driving fast in reverse you can check all the wires under the bonnet and make sure there all connected propaly do this while the ehgine is off and your engine is cold otherwise you could burn yourself

Car petrol engine revolution surges.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
