Question about 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Open Question

Where is located the voltage regulator in a hyundai elantra 2004?

I replace the battery and I replace the alternator twice because Autopart store told me a possible defect in the alternator, but now I have the same problem.the voltage in the battery is getting lower when the engine, A/C and lights are on. Now they told me a possible failure in the voltage regulator but I can't find it in the car. I feel really bad because I expend all my weekend under the car and I do't want to be in the middle of the expressway again waiting for the towing truck.

SOURCE: 2004 Hyundai Elantra problems after replacing alternator

Sound to me like some wires were either disturbed or crossed and are shorting out maybe when you replaced the alternator?Maybe have a look at the alternator connections again and make sure everything is correct and tight and that the new alternator is the right one for your car.Other than that its a case of tracing the wires from the alternator to the fusebox to find whats blowing your fuse.

Check your engine oil and break oil weather it is in below low level or full, if it has in low level get an engine oil for your car module and pour it. otherwise go to authorized Hyundai service centre and check for it.

Hyundai Elantra keeps dying despite my electronics being off.

Does the car crank slowly, or the starter clicks when you attempt to start it? If the alternator or voltage regulator is bad, the battery would continue to lose energy and appear to be bad. Alternators need to be fed voltage since they don't have magnets to excite the windings. On my Volvo, sometimes the indicator lights don't come on when I turn the ignition on, before actually cranking the engine. When this happens, I know from experience that the battery won't charge. Do you get any dash lights showing a problem?

You can check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running; it should be well over 12 volts if charging.

If a trunk, glove compartment or interior light is on, that can run the battery down too.

Why my Hyundai elantra j2 1.6gl 1999. Voltage at battery terminals when car running 18.4 volts. Could this be the alternator thats faulty, if so how does one test the alternator?

this sounds like a bad alternator/voltage regulator problem. not sure if Hyundai uses a computer control regulator so you might be looking at a computer replacement. have it check out at a shop so your not throwing parts at it that are not needed.

Voltage regulator

The voltage regulator is built into the alternator. The alternator is connected to one of the belts on the engine.

Alternator charges at 14.4volts, replaced regulator, same result. boils battery.

The max charge voltage is usually around 14.5 volts, so 14.4 is not high.
Its possible the battery has a dead cell and that is causing the acid problem.
You might want to check with the dealer on what the max voltage is for your car.

check 10 amp ECM fuse. Your alternator voltage is regulated by the ECM. If the fuse is good, consider replacing the ECM.

I am having the same problem with my 2004 Elantra. I have had the alternator tested twice and did replace the battery. This morning I had it running ad put a volt meter on it ( red to the battery pos black to the engine block) I did get a reading of 14 volts for about 30 seconds then the idle lowered and the voltage dropped to 12 volts. I tried this again later but could not get a voltage reading above 12 volts with the motor running. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you got a bad rebuilt alternator. I'd bring it back to where you got it from and if they have a way of bench testing it, then have them do that or just replace it.
